You know what? I’m happy! 😁 I’m proud of myself! I’m clenching my fist and jabbing my elbow down to my side because I am now a full time employed Laboratory Analyst at ! 😃
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
That’s right! Your boy is back in his profession! I’m back to doing the things I LOVE: running scientific analyses and sharing those results people in language they can understand. Many of the world’s most successful people have said they had to struggle before they accomplished a major goal. Well, I may not share their level of success, but I definitely share their experience of struggle. And I want you to know that the only reason I made it to this point was because I kept going.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I kept going because the people closest to me knew I had everything I needed to be successful—even when I didn’t know it myself. They had faith that my time would come, and I decided to step forward in their faith over my doubts. It didn’t matter that every science job I applied to before rejected me. This one accepted me, and I am grateful to my people for making sure I didn’t give up on myself.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
My time came when I least expected it, which is somewhat of a theme in my life. God is always on time though and I thank him for all he has done for me. To all the people that connected with me to offer me advice, review my applications, recommend me to people hiring, invited me to do talks, called my name in rooms I did not have access to, etc., I am grateful for what you did for me. And I’ll say one more time that I extend a whole heap of gratitude to the people that encouraged me to keep going. This win is yours as much as it is mine. ~ χπ

We love celebrating National Forensic Science Week because promoting careers in the forensic sciences is one thing we do all year round!

In July of this year (7/2023) Founder Ciaran Phillip was invited to speak to students of the Horizons Summer School Program at the historic Upper Canada College (UCC) in Toronto. He engaged the diverse group of almost 90 students, from grades 7 - 9, and around 10 staff on his experiences as a chemist and forensic scientist. His audience were enthusiastic to interact as well, posing thought provoking questions on mental health, courtroom testimony, and even forensic investigate genetic genealogy!

We thank the Horizons staff for the opportunity to showcase the work forensic scientists do collecting, examining, and interpreting physical evidence as part of the process to try and determine the truth about past events. Special appreciation goes out to teacher Isabella Di Stefano for setting things in motion and Horizons Director Jyoti Seghal for the warm welcome to UCC’s campus.

If you would like Ciaran to lead a workshop, teach a specific topic, demonstrate a technique, or deliver a presentation then email us at [email protected] to discuss more 👍🏾

Happy National Forensic Science Week!

Since September 2012 the Consortium of Forensic Science Organizations (CFSO) in the US has spearheaded what has become the worlds largest public awareness campaign for the forensic sciences (Not counting all the TV shows of course 😆).

We join with ALL forensic science professionals—from local police department crime scene photographers to national agency laboratory directors to independent consultants—to highlight our contributions to the legal system and continued advancement of science to benefit everyone.

Over the weekend (March 17 & 18) we had the honour of participating in a series of children’s workshops on Women in STEM. The series was produced by the Canadian Multicultural Inventors Museum and hosted by the Clark Centre for the Arts in the Guildwood neighborhood of Scarborough/Toronto.

This event focused on the stories, careers, and expertise of four successful women from different backgrounds. If you weren’t there you definitely missed out! But here’s a summary of our superstars:

Lorna Green: a trailblazer in the Caribbean tech industry with decades of experience developing digital technology products as a corporate manager and entrepreneur. This Jamaican national 🇯🇲 is the author of children’s book series “Beng & Friends” which follows a group of young Black children and their parents as they discover more about advanced careers in the technology sector.

Virgini Mubarak: an undisputed expert in the North American engineering community who has made key contributions in quality assurance and safety across several industries. Originally from Egypt 🇪🇬 she is invested in empowering girls to become future engineering professionals.

Lesley Page: this formerly high earning corporate executive quit her job to become a high flying private pilot! A Canadian 🇨🇦 member of the Ninety-Nines she continues the legacy of women in flight as a motivational speaker teaching girls how to overcome obstacles and fears to soar towards lofty goals.

Dr. Bhairavi Shankar: a respected planetary science researcher and geographic information systems (GIS) innovator who turned her passion for science communication into a dynamic startup consulting company. This Tamil woman hailing from India 🇮🇳 has spent nearly a decade elevating the aspirations of children to design innovations for human life in space and on other worlds.

And as a bonus the event also featured Mya Gomez: a multi-talented and bilingual young woman considering a future in the coolest career in STEM 😏 Mya has roots in Trinidad 🇹🇹 and has been positively influenced by her father to advance her knowledge and skills in science. She volunteered her time to ably assist Ciaran in his workshop; even leading a fingerprint demo/experiment for our participants! We wish her the best as she weighs her options for university next academic year 🙏🏾🤞🏾

Thank you all for supporting this event! Happy Women’s History Month!

As a company our aim is to leverage the knowledge, skills, abilities, and experiences of our team to support the success of others in several areas.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So we were thrilled to connect with global women empowerment organization: Graduate Women in Science (GWIS) to support them in “Creating Equity for Improved Teamwork”. At their Virtual Mentoring Webinar held on November 30, Founder Ciaran Phillip told the participants about the restrictive organization he entered ~10 years ago and how he helped make it a more equitable environment in 6 years.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
These were his 3 pointers for creating an equity-based team dynamic:
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
1️⃣ Be open-minded — remind yourself that there is often more to things than what you currently know 🧠
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
2️⃣ Value the contribution, not the size of the contribution — once a team member does something to help the team then that’s always a good thing 👏🏾
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
3️⃣ Be patient — getting others to act in an equitable manner will take time, but once you maintain equity as the standard for what you do then you will find opportunities to make real change 🫱🏾‍🫲🏻
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Thanks to Dr. Rachel Cole, GWIS Programming Committee Chair for inviting us to have Coffee and Conversation (even though Ciaran prefers tea 😁) with their members. Thanks also to Dr. Huan Gu who runs these webinars for setting Ciaran up for success. The participants also wanted to hear about forensic science but that deserves its own future webinar (and cup of tea 😄)

While Toronto was engulfed by cold and snowy winter weather 🌨️ last weekend (Nov 18 & 19), the Caribbean island of Trinidad was blessed with warmth and sunshine ☀️ So it was no surprise that the latter was chosen to host the 6th Annual Caribbean Medicolegal and Forensic Symposium.

Close to 200 medicolegal and forensic science professionals attended the in-person conference but sadly our Founder Ciaran Phillip was not among them 😔 However, Ciaran was a presenter, delivering a talk entitled “Principles of Crime Scene Management”.

Even though scene examination is at the start of an investigation, Ciaran told the attendees to keep the end goal of justice in mind right away. He also offered his definition of Crime Scene Management incorporating methodical, intelligence led, strategic, and quality minded aspects. All in all, it was well received by the attendees.

Looking for a trained Forensic Scientist with experience in Crime Scene Investigation, Fingerprints, and Fi****ms to speak to your students or employees? Send us an email at [email protected] and let’s make that happen.

didn’t believe in us, but SATEC did! 🙏🏾

Founder Ciaran Phillip is starting something GREAT at one of the most innovative high schools in the Toronto District School Board.

More details coming soon 😁

As a Canada-based science communication company we were proud to be counted amongst the attendees for yesterday's (September 28) Gairdner Foundation Science Literacy Workshop: "Let's Get Social: Leveraging Social Media for Science"

We heard short presentations from four of Canada’s most active social media science communicators followed by a roundtable discussion amongst them. Plus, the moderator was none other than iconic science communicator Dr. Raven the Science Maven 🤩

We loved the insights from Tim, Alice, Dr. Patel, and Dr. Richardson on the good and bad of communicating science to Canadians via social media. We agree with their calls for more diverse voices in the conversations and the need for the regulation of misinformation on social media platforms.

We are grateful to the Gairdner Foundation for putting on this event and also congratulate the Government of Canada, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, Science Up First, and the other collaborators on delivering such a timely workshop 👏🏾👍🏾
