Lithium-ion batteries are used in many rechargeable products, including personal electronics, e-bikes and power tools.

During Fire Prevention Week, Health Canada is reminding Canadians that improper charging, battery damage, misuse and incompatible charging equipment can increase the risk of fire.

Heading out on a road trip? 🚗

It’s likely that lithium battery powered devices like smartphones, laptops and power banks will be a part of your packing checklist.

Another thing to add to the list? A few safety tips to help reduce the risk of battery fires:

✅ Check your devices for signs of damage like a swollen or dented battery before travelling
✅ Use the charging cord that came with the device and don’t keep charging after it is fully charged
✅Store your devices in a room temperature place

Understanding how to handle and transport lithium batteries safely can help protect you, your passengers, and everyone on the road.

Safe travels start with informed choices. 🔋

Before you put your lawnmower away for good this year, make sure your grass is cut to a length of 10cm or less. 🍃

Long, dry grass is highly combustible, so it is important to keep vegetation short, especially within 30 meters of your home.

This week is Fire Prevention Week and we want to take a moment to say a BIG thank you to the firefighters and emergency dispatchers who work behind the scenes and right in the middle of the action, to keep our communities safe.

Whether it’s answering that first emergency call, rushing out the door in the middle of the night, or responding to a fire or other emergency, our local fire departments and dispatchers are there when people need them most. We are incredibly grateful for the time, training, and commitment they give to our communities.

Fire Prevention Week is also a good reminder that there are a few simple things we can all do to help keep our homes and families safe:

🧯 Check your smoke alarms: make sure they’re working and that you have one on every level of your home and outside sleeping areas.

🚪 Make a fire escape plan: know two ways out of every room and choose a meeting spot outside. Make sure everyone in your household knows the plan!

🍳 Stay in the kitchen when cooking: unattended cooking can turn into a fire very quickly.

🕯️ Never leave candles unattended: keep them away from anything that can catch fire.

🔌 Pay attention to your electrical devices: don’t overload outlets and replace damaged cords.

🔋 Replace batteries: change batteries that are damaged, swollen, or overheating.

♻ Follow proper recycling and disposal practices.

🔥 Keep exits clear: in an emergency, you don’t want anything standing between you and the door.

And perhaps most importantly, talk about fire safety with your family. Knowing what to do before an emergency happens can make all the difference.

To all of our firefighters across the Municipality of Digby and surrounding communities as well as our dispatchers, thank you for showing up, answering the call, and looking out for our communities. We appreciate you more than you know.
