Some great news from our 2025 roost counts, and a bit of bat count envy! Those big number counts must be epic! 🦇

Seven sites from the BC Annual Bat Counts had over 2,000 bats!😍

Report dead bats and winter bat activity to the BC Community Bat Program. 🦇

👉Help us monitor for White-nose Syndrome. This is a disease that has not been found in BC bats yet, but has been found just across the border in Washington and in Alberta.
👉White-nose Syndrome is caused by a fungus that attacks the bats while they are in hibernation. It grows on their skin and wings thus giving the appearance of a white nose. Some species are highly susceptible to it and die.
👉 It does not affect other wildlife, pets or people.

It’s been another great year for our Comox Bat Team!

While you’re out and about, check out the bat displays at the Community Centre and the downtown pop-up park to snap a photo with our “face-in-the-hole” bat board, and don’t miss the new Bat Info Walk along the Lazo Greenway.

A big thank you to everyone who attended our Bat Chats at the Community Centre and the MARS AGM. The community has shown amazing support for local bat conservation .

Did you know that fall is the perfect time to start a native plant garden for bats?🦇

Native plants support the life stages of night-flying insects, the main food source for our local bats!

By planting native seeds now, you can help build a buffet for bats next summer and support a healthy ecosystem for all pollinators.

If you attended yesterday's AGM you probably saw Megan Ericksons presentation about bat patients in our hospital.

Yesterday one of our patients that came in was a Yuma Myotis bat (YUMA 999) and it is our first "hibernation disturbance" of the year. While our little critters are finding nice safe and warm places to hole up for the winter, its a good reminder that all our spaces are shared, and avoiding caves, tunnels, or other known hibernacula (places where animals hibernate), particularly during winter months.

Stripping bark off trees, and turning brush piles can disturb hibernating species like this, so it's recommended you leave them be until it warms up a little next year. Even awnings and patio umbrellas that create nice folds and spaces for these hibernating critters.

All this being said, if bats are disturbed from this, we are always happy to come and check out the situation and bring them into care if needed, it is always better safe than sorry!

💔 Working with injured animals day after day can be very heart-breaking and cases like this one can be the most difficult to encounter since they are preventable.

Glue traps catch more than what you intend for them to catch! This poor bat was victim to a trap, perhaps lured by the sounds of struggling insects. Despite huge efforts from the team to save this bat, the shock was too much for his body to recover from and he sadly passed away after two days in care.

This year we have received several song birds, mice, and a bat stuck in glue traps, and larger animals and reptiles are can be snared as well. They all struggle to free themselves, tearing flesh and breaking bones in the process.

Please help us protect wildlife by sharing this message and not using these inhumane traps!
