Sexualized violence can lead to both criminal and civil court cases, but they serve different purposes.

⚖️ In criminal court, the focus is on punishing the offender for breaking the law. If found guilty, the offender could face jail time or other penalties.

📄 In civil court, survivors can seek compensation for the harm done, like emotional distress or medical costs. It’s about holding the offender accountable in a different way.

Join us for a free, virtual workshop on trauma-informed legal practice! This training is for anyone in the legal sector – including community advocates.

Facilitated by clinical psychologist Dr. Lori Haskell, participants will gain skills and knowledge to support survivors of sexual violence and intimate partner violence.
Participants will learn how:

☑ Trauma is stored in the body and limbic system, creating physical and psychological symptoms.

☑ Trauma can impact victim memory, reactions and behaviour and how misinterpreting this behaviour impacts sexual assault investigations.

☑ To assess your own practices and processes with a trauma-informed lens.

If someone shares your intimate image without your consent, it can feel overwhelming and distressing. You are not alone, and there are legal options available in Prince Edward Island.

Under the Intimate Images Protection Act, you may be able to start a civil action in the Supreme Court of PEI. A civil action is a court process between people. It is not a criminal case, and it does not involve the police.

Through this process, you can ask the court for a legal order. This is called a remedy. A remedy may include things like having the image removed, or receiving financial compensation for harm or loss. The court may also order other steps depending on your situation.

If you are thinking about reporting to the police, or if you are unsure about your options, we are here to help you understand what is available and what steps may feel right for you.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is abuse or aggression in a romantic relationship.

This violence can include physical, sexual, psychological, financial, stalking, or coercive control.

Intimate partners can include current and former spouses or dating partners. It can happen to anyone—no matter your age, gender, or background.

Your safety matters. If you're experiencing IPV, please reach out to someone you trust or a support service.

Coercive control is a pattern of behaviour used by one person to dominate and control another, often in an intimate relationship.

It may look like:

▪ Manipulation, intimidation, and threats.

▪ Being isolated from your friends and family.

▪ Having your movements monitored.

▪ Being criticized and belittled.

▪ Having your money controlled.

Everyone deserves freedom and respect in their relationships. If you or someone you know is facing coercive control, reach out to us.

We’re here to listen and can help you understand your options.
