A spokesperson for Alberta’s Ministry of Transportation and Economic Corridors told CBC News that the average speed recorded in the pilot zone between May 29 and July 29 was 119.6 km/h. During the same period in 2025, the average speed was 118 km/h.

The Alberta government also reported that six collisions occurred in the pilot zone between May 20 and July 29 this year. Historically, that section of highway has recorded an average of six to eight collisions per month.

The advance pedestrian signal gives people a few extra seconds to begin crossing before vehicles are allowed to turn, helping pedestrians move farther into the crosswalk before traffic starts moving.

Calgary currently has these signals at 53 intersections. One city councillor says the measure is a simple way to improve pedestrian safety, as the number of pedestrians being struck has increased by about 20 per cent.

A new notice of motion proposes expanding the advance signals to all high-collision intersections, as well as intersections near schools and transit. The proposal calls for the expansion to be completed within two years.

The motion is expected to be discussed by the city’s executive committee on Tuesday. If approved there, it would move to Calgary city council for consideration on September 22.

Authorities say more than $1 million in suspected drug proceeds and over $1.2 million worth of illegal drugs were seized during a major police operation in Calgary.

ALERT says its organized crime team carried out the investigation on July 30, searching a home in the Skyview neighbourhood with assistance from Calgary police and the RCMP.

Investigators believe the cash seizure, which is still being counted and analyzed, is the largest single cash seizure in ALERT’s history.

Police also seized 6,881 grams of suspected M**A, more than 3,000 grams of suspected fentanyl, over 2,100 grams of suspected methamphetamine, and nearly 500 grams each of suspected co***ne and cannabis.

Two other homes in Harvest Hills and Rocky Ridge, as well as two vehicles, were also searched as part of the investigation.

Kerry Lu, 36, and Donald Ng, 51, are facing charges including possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, possession of proceeds of crime, and possession of a prohibited weapon. The charges have not been proven in court.
