You turned on the furnace and… what’s that smell? 👃🔥

Ah yes, the unofficial smell of fall — turning on the furnace for the first time in months. 🍂

A brief dusty or slightly burnt smell can happen when your heating system first starts up for the season. Dust that has settled on components while the furnace wasn’t being used can create an odour as the system heats up.

But there’s an important difference between “first furnace run of the season” and “something isn’t right.”

If the smell persists, becomes stronger, smells electrical or unusual, or your furnace just doesn’t seem to be operating normally, don’t ignore it. Have it checked by a professional.

Your furnace can tell you a lot — sometimes you just have to use your nose. 😉

Don’t let the first cold morning be the first time you turn on your furnace. 🍂🔥

Calgary has a way of going from “nice fall day” to “why is it freezing in here?” surprisingly quickly. 😅

Before you really need the heat, give your furnace a test run. Turn it on, make sure your thermostat responds properly, check that warm air is reaching your rooms, and listen for anything that sounds unusual.

If something doesn’t seem quite right — or your furnace is due for maintenance — now is the time to call. It’s much better to find a problem on a mild September day than during the first cold snap!
