A Better Calgary Party 10/03/2024

Vote splitting could once again open a path for re-election for Calgary Mayor Gondek, according to Herald editorialist Chris Nelson. And he doesn’t even get to mentioning the Calgary Act Now group, lead by past liberals and progressives like Brian Thiessen, Be Longstaff and Stephen Carter. https://www.calgaryactnow.ca/about

And right of centre A Better Calgary party, which I have gotten involved with in Ward 6, is also looking to line up candidates for Mayor and in all 14 wards. https://www.abettercalgaryparty.ca

Between Calgary and Fort McMurray, I had an opportunity to reflect on our National Day of Truth and Reconcilation. T&R is every day, all year.

Thinking about the residents, staff and visitors of Jasper as they have dispersed to centres in BC and Alberta. Hoping today’s predicted rainfall will help diminish the blaze.

City councillor wants Edmonton to limit short-term rentals | CBC News 10/24/2023

Edmonton councillors who want to control the short term rental housing market need to take a long look at themselves after passing their “renewed” land use bylaw on Monday. This new bylaw purports to allow everything, everywhere, all at once. A similar land use bylaw proposal will be coming to Calgary in 2024. Providing short term accommodation (through the approval of small local businesses in the midst of residential neighbourhoods) would be part of this idealized complete community. So the one hand, while Edmonton council says they want everything, everywhere all at once, when push comes to shove, they really don’t.

CBC walks back report on COVID-19 protests | Calgary Herald 07/07/2023

I can say, for a fact, that during the election the anger that I perceived from many voters about Premier Smith was fuelled, in part, by this CBC story. The Premier made some misstatements for which she clearly apologized, but in the face of the stoic and resolute decision of the CBC to not back down, that may have been too little too late in the eyes of many. This journalistic resolve further supported the NDP narrative that you couldn’t trust Premier Smith. It was fear and smear and it was, unfortunately very effective in influencing many voters. In a close election, this may have been the difference.

I understand the Premier’s wish to move on and to not pursue damages in a lawsuit. Damages as a measure of compensation would be difficult to assess in straight dollars terms. But clearly there was damage done.

Unfortunately we were not able to secure a seat for Calgary-Elbow. While the results were not as close as in the adjacent ridings of Acadia and Glenmore, it was a very close race as well in Elbow. Congrats to the NDP’s successful new MLA Samir Kayande. I know you will work diligently and be present for the great residents in Calgary-Elbow! Thanks too to Alberta Party candidate Kerry Cundal, who also worked hard and is a class act. Thanks to my team of volunteers and supporters. We put it all on the table and came so close! And, finally, thanks to the many many voters in Calgary-Elbow who showed faith in me and did not “lend me your vote” but gave it to me unreservedly!
