Today, we join communities across Canada in recognizing the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This is a day to honour the histories, cultures, and contributions of Indigenous Peoples, and to acknowledge the harms they have endured.
This day encourages all of us to reflect on the legacy of colonial policies that have deeply impacted Indigenous communities, including the Indian Act, which restricted rights and autonomy for generations. While these histories are painful, they are essential to understand as we move forward together on the path of reconciliation.
Learning, listening, and engaging with truth is a shared responsibility. It begins with a commitment to hearing the stories of survivors and Indigenous voices and recognizing the strength and resilience that continue to define these communities today.
The Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Call to Action 92 asks organizations to support the implementation of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. This includes building respectful relationships, providing equitable opportunities, and ensuring staff are equipped with cultural awareness, anti-racism education, and the skills to engage meaningfully and respectfully.
Reconciliation is not a single act, but a continuous journey. It is one that calls for compassion, humility, and action. We are committed to moving forward with open hearts and minds, and to working together to build a future rooted in respect, equity, and understanding.
We would like to extend our sincere thanks to our Indigenous partners for their ongoing collaboration, knowledge, and contributions. Your voices, perspectives, and leadership continue to shape our collective path forward, and we are grateful for the opportunity to work alongside you.
