Mostly, nothing dramatic — if it was in good shape going into the cold. Sound stucco and parging handle freezing temperatures fine on their own. The problems come from existing damage, not the cold itself.

Here's the mechanism: any crack or gap that's already there becomes a pathway. Snow melts against the wall on a warmer day, water gets into that gap, then it freezes again overnight. That cycle repeats all winter, and each freeze can widen the damage a little more.

So the real question isn't "will winter hurt my stucco" — it's "did anything already have a way in before winter started." If yes, that's worth knowing about now, even if the actual repair has to wait until spring.

Three months into doing this, so this week's question is one I'm asking myself: "What's the one thing you wish every Calgary homeowner knew about stucco or parging before they called a contractor?"

Get more than one quote, and ask each contractor what they actually found when they looked — not just what they'd charge. A rushed walk-around gives you a rushed number. Someone who actually gets up close and explains what they're seeing is usually the same person who's going to do the job properly.

The other thing: small damage is never "just cosmetic." Every crack, chip, or gap is a potential entry point, and Calgary's climate doesn't give exterior damage any time off. What looks minor in July can be a real problem by the following spring if nobody looked at it in between.

That's it, really. Ask questions, expect a real answer, and don't wait on the small stuff.

Nobody likes talking about cost, but this is the honest math behind "don't wait" — because it's not just a sales line, it's how freeze-thaw damage actually behaves.

A small crack caught early is usually a straightforward patch. Leave it through one Calgary winter and the ice has had a chance to widen it, and moisture has had a chance to get further behind the wall. Leave it through two winters and you're not patching anymore — you're often looking at a full section rebuild, sometimes with additional costs if it's affected the substrate or framing behind it.

This isn't about scaring anyone into calling today. It's just genuinely how the physics works — water in a crack, freezing overnight, expanding, repeat. The math only moves in one direction if nothing's done.

This week's question, and it's a fair one this time of year: "Is it too late to get stucco or parging repaired before winter?"
Short answer: not yet, but there's a real window and it's not endless.
Stucco and parging repair materials need a minimum temperature to cure properly — both during application and for a stretch afterward. Once Calgary starts getting consistent overnight lows near freezing, that window closes for most exterior work. That's usually sometime in October, though it shifts year to year depending on how the fall goes.
So "too late" isn't a fixed date — it's a moving target based on the weather. Which is exactly why I'd rather someone call in September and get booked than wait until the first cold snap and find out the window's already gone.
