Turning Point is a registered charity supporting safer, healthier communities for Central Albertans.

Formally known as the Central Alberta AIDS Network Society (CAANS), Turning Point was established in 1988 as a community-based response to Central Alberta's HIV/AIDS crisis. In addition to health promotion, our organization has since expanded its reach, incorporating programming specific to harm reduction, night reach, rural outreach, overdose prevention, and a women’s program. These programs and services extend to communities across Central Alberta (including Red Deer, Drumheller, Hanna, Camrose, Flagstaff, Samson, Stettler, Rocky Mountain House, O’Chiese First Nation, and Wetaskiwin). Whether you're looking for harm reduction and STBBI preventative resources or are in need of ongoing support, our professionals are here to help. Turning Point continues to identify and support the complex needs of each community we serve, providing education, supplies, and services with compassion, confidentiality, respect, collaboration, and empowerment.

September 30 | National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Today, we honour National Day for Truth and Reconciliation by remembering the children who were taken from their families and communities, the survivors of residential schools, and those who continue to carry the impacts of this history.

Why Orange?

Orange Shirt Day began with the story of Phyllis Webstad, a residential school Survivor. In 1973, when Phyllis was six years old, she arrived at the St. Joseph Mission Residential School wearing a new orange shirt that her grandmother had bought especially for her. The shirt was taken away on her first day and was never returned.

Her story helped inspire Orange Shirt Day – Every Child Matters, which has become an important day of remembrance, education, and reflection across Canada. It is an opportunity to learn about the history and ongoing impacts of residential schools and to reflect on what reconciliation requires of all of us.

For Turning Point and the people we serve, these realities are not simply part of history. The effects of colonial policies and residential schools continue to shape families, communities, housing, health, and access to services today.

Truth and reconciliation is about more than remembering one day a year. It means listening to Indigenous voices, learning from Indigenous communities, recognizing the impacts of the past and present, and taking meaningful steps toward a more equitable and respectful future.

Today, we remember.
Today, we listen.
Today, we learn.

We're hiring!!

Consider applying to work in our newly renovated Safe Point Program (previously known as the "Women's Program").

This essential role will help us expand into supporting individuals at risk of, or who are/have experienced gender based violence to better prevent occurrences and to better access applicable justice services.

A shiny new brochure is in the works for a wholesome look at what we can now offer within the Safe Point Program.

If you or someone you know might be a fit to support our Licenced Practical Nurse in launching this new branch of our gender based programming, including expanding it's access to gender diverse individuals, please check out the indeed link here and send us a cover letter and resume.
