Did you know that biophilic design elements have an impact on reducing stress and anxiety?
A recent study by Jie Yin and colleagues (2019) conducted a virtual reality experiment, finding that environments with biophilic design elements had larger restorative impacts on physiological stress and psychological anxiety than non-biophilic environments.
Research like this is incredibly important in helping us understand how design and interior environments impact our overall well-being. Have you ever considered using biophilic elements in your space? Let us know what elements you have considered in the comments below! 👇

Check out this stunning trough sink in the gender neutral washroom we designed for Professional Excavators & Construction Inc
Although this sink is beautiful- it is actually an intentionally accessible design element! The clear space/lack of obstacles underneath allows it to be used by those with mobility difficulties. Moreover, it helps in creating a sense that everyone can use this space. It does not define someone who requires assistance as different, it provides everyone with the same level of access to amenities.

Today is Global Accessibility Awareness Day. For us, accessibility is about creating spaces that are inclusive for a wide range of people. This means considering how all sorts of individuals will interact with elements in the space. There are 5 accessible design elements visible in this dining hall we designed for Chartwell Retirement Residences Kamloops that also double as design features. Can you spot them all? Answers are below 👇
Answers:
1. Bright lighting: helps those with visual impairments
2. acoustic wall panels and ceiling tiles: add interest and dimension to the space while addressing acoustics in this large open space
3. Sturdy armed chairs: helps maintain independence in movement
4. Smooth and continuous flooring: assists with ease of mobility with many groups
5. Wide aisles for accessibility and maneuverability

One of the key factors of sustainable design is product selection. We love Mirage Floors hardwoods for their durable and gorgeous hardwoods, but sustainability goes beyond simply the quality of the product or how long it will last in a space. Sustainability also involves the materials, manufacturing process and waste management. Mirage is conscious of their impact in every step of the process - which only adds to the beauty of their hardwoods!

In sustainable or "green" design, the use of natural lighting and ventilation is common as these features help reduce energy consumption. Interestingly, researchers at Harvard University noted a significant difference in cognitive function scores of workers when working in a green environment as compared to a conventional working environment.

We're loving this rendering for a sensory room, designed for Discovery House Child Development Centre.
Sensory rooms are a great tool to develop visual processing ability as well as motor skillsets! Interestingly, they also promote relaxation/stress reduction and can even help lead to better communication skills.
