October is Women's History Month.
During this month, we celebrate women from Canada's history who have helped shape the country.
Today, it is Hannah Gale

Over 750 Black men enlisted in the No. 2 Construction Battalion. Most of the men were Black men from Nova Scotia and Ontario. Others came from across Canada. Men from the Caribbean, many of who were already in Canada also enlisted. And over 200 men born the United States joined.

When the battalion sailed for England in 1917, there were 595 men.

Lincoln Alexander (born January 21, 1922; died October 19, 2012) entered Canadian constitutional history with uncommon resolve and public grace. His appointment as Ontario’s lieutenant governor on September 20, 1985 marked the first time a Black Canadian ascended to a vice‑regal office, transforming both the symbolism and the lived reality of provincial leadership.

Alexander’s life had already traced a distinguished arc—from wartime service to legal practice to federal Parliament—but his 1985 installation carried a deeper national resonance.

It affirmed that public institutions could finally reflect the full breadth of Canadian citizenship. Throughout his tenure, he championed youth, education, and civic responsibility, embodying a statesman’s steadiness while widening the horizon for future generations. His legacy continues to shape conversations about Canadian public life and vice-regal history.
