If you’ve ventured a little deeper into the metaphorical crypto woods, you’ve already heard of tokens. But what are they? Just like cryptocurrencies, they are a type of digital asset. In fact, all cryptocurrencies are technically also tokens. 🤯

Remember Bitcoin and Ether, the world’s biggest cryptocurrencies? They each run on their own blockchain: Bitcoin and Ethereum, respectively. Sometimes people use the term “token” to refer to a cryptocurrency that does not have its own native blockchain.

So what does a token do? Tokens can have different functions. They can hold value or be exchanged; they can represent digital or physical assets; or they can be utilized for a certain purpose or service.

Take KlimaDAO’s KLIMA token, for example. KLIMA tokens represent real-world carbon offsets. By removing these carbon offsets from the market and locking them in KlimaDAO’s treasury (in the form of these tokens), the organization effectively drives up the price of any carbon offsets remaining on the market (while also increasing the value of KLIMA tokens!). This incentivizes companies to transition to a carbon-neutral future more quickly and meaningfully. It's a win-win for people and the environment! 🌱

DAOs: The Latest Iteration in Human Collaboration DAOs are an ancient human narrative being spoken into a new form.

What is ? In simple terms, cryptocurrency is virtual money. 💵💵💵

Maybe you've heard the names and (run on the blockchain). They are examples of the two biggest cryptocurrencies currently in existence.

The “crypto” part of the term refers to the fact that transactions of this virtual currency are secured by cryptographic techniques and encryption algorithms.

Most cryptocurrencies are built on a public blockchain, which allows for fast, worldwide, low-cost transactions between users without the involvement of central banks or third parties.

Each currency runs on its own blockchain, which continuously records and re-verifies every transaction ever made using that currency.

Bitcoin, for example, operates on a public blockchain that anyone can join. Anyone can read, write, and audit the ongoing activities of the blockchain – it is transparent, permissionless, and decentralized.

This is what makes cryptocurrency so interesting and appealing to many people. It marks a dramatic shift from money as we know it.
