This unique traditional East African style of Fabric Art is as much about the process, as it is the final product. Deon Best is one of the premiere Modern Batik Artist in Canada located in Brampton, ON. Over the last decade Deon Best has taught over 350 students from all backgrounds, ages and skill levels.
Sometimes, you have to look back to realize how far your creativity has travelled.
While going through some of my artwork recently, I stumbled across something I honestly didn't realize…

Across different periods of my creative journey, I've found myself returning to them again and again, through sketches, ideas, oils, digital art and, of course, Modern Batik Fabric Art. Different mediums. Different moments. Different chapters.
Some were simply thoughts taking shape. Others became finished pieces. And one even found its way onto a speaker cover I customized using Modern Batik because why not turn everyday objects into lifestyle art? 😉
Looking back reminded me that sometimes we don't take enough time to pause and appreciate what we've created along the way. Every piece is part of the journey, expressing, experimenting, learning, evolving and continuing to create.

Created inside my Brampton Arts Organization Studio Residency, “Silhouettic” explores profiles of interconnectedness through bold forms and deep, tonal colour palettes.
From the first line to the final detail, this residency has given me the space to experiment, create, connect and continue evolving my Modern Batik Fabric art practice.
As this chapter comes to a close, I’m grateful for the experience and excited for what’s next. 💚

Our first Modern Batik Hoop Art Experience at Visual Arts Mississauga was one for the books!
Batik Hoop Art is the process of transforming fabric into vibrant, one-of-a-kind artwork using East African Batik-inspired techniques, then finishing the piece in a wooden hoop ready to display. 🎨
From creating in the studio to taking our finished pieces outside and letting them meet the beautiful VAM gardens at sunset… this was creativity in its element. 🌅
A huge thank you to Visual Arts Mississauga and everyone who came ready to create, explore and have a little fun with fabric and colour!
