Not all caterpillars are cute and harmless—some wear their spiky coats as a warning. Many fuzzy caterpillars in Belize carry irritating hairs or mild toxins to keep predators (and curious ) away.

While small, they play a big role in the ecosystem: as leaf-eaters they help shape plant growth, and as prey they provide food for birds, reptiles, and even other insects. And in time, this crawling forest dweller will transform into a moth, another essential piece of Belize’s biodiversity. 🌿

Often overlooked because of its tiny size, the Little Brown Skink (Scincella lateralis) plays a big role in the forest floor .
