: Meet Belize’s gentle giant – the Baird’s Tapir 🐾, our national animal and a keystone species of the rainforest. Sadly, these shy, nocturnal herbivores are endangered, threatened by habitat loss and hunting.
That’s where conservation in action comes in. 💚 Through community engagement, habitat protection, and on-the-ground research, Selva Conservation is working to safeguard tapirs and the rainforests they call home.
Every step counts, because protecting the tapir means protecting the future of Belize’s wild places. 🌎
➡️ Support conservation. Protect the tapir. Protect Belize.

: Fuzzy Forest Caterpillar 🐛
Not all caterpillars are cute and harmless—some wear their spiky coats as a warning. Many fuzzy caterpillars in Belize carry irritating hairs or mild toxins to keep predators (and curious ) away.
While small, they play a big role in the ecosystem: as leaf-eaters they help shape plant growth, and as prey they provide food for birds, reptiles, and even other insects. And in time, this crawling forest dweller will transform into a moth, another essential piece of Belize’s biodiversity. 🌿

: The Little Brown Skink 🦎
Often overlooked because of its tiny size, the Little Brown Skink (Scincella lateralis) plays a big role in the forest floor . Feeding on insects, it helps keep pest populations in check while serving as prey for larger animals; a reminder that even the smallest creatures are vital links in the food web.
Unfortunately, skinks are highly sensitive to habitat loss. Logging, agriculture, and land clearing remove the leaf litter and moist ground cover they depend on for shelter and survival.
Protecting Belize’s forests means protecting even the tiniest lives that keep the ecosystem balanced. 🌿
