Durante a COP30, a diretoria do Instituto AmazoniAlerta participou de atividades
com a presença da Min. Sônia Guajajara. Esta foi a COP do Clima com a maior participação de
povos indígenas, desde que as conferências se iniciaram. Foram centenas de lideranças
indígenas credenciadas para acessar a Zona Azul, local onde as negociações climáticas
acontecem. O Brasil exerce um papel central no enfrentamento às mudanças climáticas, a
partir da proteção das terras indígenas que mantêm a floresta em pé.

During COP30 AmazoniAlerta’s team participated in activities in the presence of the Minister of
Indigenous Peoples of Brazil, Sônia Guajajara. This was the Climate COP with the greatest
participation of indigenous peoples since the conferences began. Hundreds of indigenous
leaders were accredited to access the Blue Zone, the location where climate negotiations take
place. Brazil plays a central role in addressing climate change, starting with the protection of
Indigenous lands that keep the forest standing.

Nossa diretora jurídica Carolina Santana participou do evento “Mercado de Carbono e seus Desafios” realizado pelo Instituto Clima com apoio da idp. No painel “Povos tradicionais, agricultura familiar e desafios” ela discutiu o empoderamento dos povos e das comunidades tradicionais, e o protagonismo da agricultura familiar na implementação do mercado de carbono brasileiro.

“Saberemos que o mercado de carbono foi bem-sucedido se ele um dia acabar, ele não pode ser uma autorização permanente para poluir”

“Atualmente, nenhum padrão de certificação de crédito de carbono possui diretrizes capazes de aferir, efetivamente, o cumprimento de salvaguardas sociais”

Our legal director Carolina Santana participated in the event “Carbon Market and its Challenges” held by the Climate Institute with the support of idp. In the panel “Traditional Peoples, Family Farming, and Challenges,” she discussed the empowerment of traditional peoples and communities and the leading role of family farming in the implementation of the Brazilian carbon market.

“We will know that the carbon market has been successful if it ever ends, it cannot be a permanent license to pollute.”

“Currently, no carbon credit certification standard has guidelines capable of effectively measuring compliance with social safeguards.”

The objective of the ODA (Official Development Assistance) Global Innovation Fellowships is to provide opportunities to UK-based early- and mid-career researchers from across the humanities and social sciences to develop their skills, networks and careers in the creative and cultural, public, private and policy sectors to address challenges that require innovative approaches and solutions

Dr Giovanna Frisso is a senior lecturer at the Lincoln Law School, University of Lincoln.
An expert in International Human Rights, Giovanna previously worked at the Brazilian Office of Public Defenders, the International Criminal Court and was a voluntary legal assistant at the Tribunal Internacional de Justicia Restaurativa en El Salvador. Together, we will work to strengthen advocacy in defense of indigenous rights within the UN system.

A Dra. Giovanna Frisso é senior lecturer da Faculdade de Direito da Universidade de Lincoln.
Especialista em Direitos Humanos Internacionais, Giovanna trabalhou anteriormente no Escritório Brasileiro de Defensores Públicos, no Tribunal Penal Internacional e foi assistente jurídica voluntária no Tribunal Internacional de Justiça Restaurativa em El Salvador. Juntos, trabalharemos para fortalecer a defesa dos direitos indígenas dentro do sistema da ONU.

As we reach the halfway point of the year, we reflect on the key actions taken to strengthen territorial defense and Indigenous rights in 2025.

This semester, due to the urgent challenges faced in the territories, we reviewed our strategies. Although fewer territorial monitoring expeditions were conducted, we responded to critical demands arising from the removal process of non-Indigenous occupants in the Araribóia Indigenous Land and the imminent removal in the Uru Eu Wau Wau Indigenous Land.

Our actions focused on protecting Indigenous leaders at risk, supporting representative organizations involved in these legal and territorial processes, and advancing the constitutional right of Indigenous peoples to full ownership of their lands.
These processes are deeply connected to the mission of AmazoniAlerta: combining legal advocacy with on-the-ground territorial protection.

Ao chegarmos à metade do ano, refletimos sobre as principais ações realizadas para fortalecer a proteção territorial e os direitos indígenas em 2025.

Neste semestre, devido aos desafios enfrentados nos territórios, revisamos nossas estratégias. Embora tenhamos realizado menos expedições de monitoramento territorial, respondemos às demandas críticas decorrentes do processo de desintrusão de ocupantes não indígenas na Terra Indígena Araribóia e da iminente desintrusão na Terra Indígena Uru Eu Wau Wau.

Nossas ações se concentraram no avanço da garantia do direito constitucional dos povos indígenas à plena posse de suas terras, no apoio a organizações representativas envolvidas nesses processos e na proteção de lideranças indígenas em risco. Esses processos estão profundamente conectados à missão do AmazoniAlerta: aliar a ação jurídica à proteção territorial em campo.

Nossa Diretora Jurídica Carolina Santana () e nossa Diretora de Assuntos Institucionais, Kari Guajajara (também coordenadora do departamento jurídico da ) estão acompanhando, orientando e apresentando importantes instituições públicas aos estudantes indígenas de Direito, bolsistas do Instituto AmazoniAlerta e os jovens advogados da Rede de Advogados Indígenas da Amazônia brasileira. Eles estão recebendo treinamento jurídico durante a 21ª edição do Acampamento Terra Livre, em Brasília. Para nós a formação de novos advogados indígenas é de extrema importância e crucial para o exercício da democracia.

Our Legal Director Carolina Santana () and our Director of Institutional Affairs, Kari Guajajara (also coordinator of the legal department at ) are monitoring, guiding and introducing important public institutions to indigenous law students, scholarship holders from the AmazoniAlerta Institute and young lawyers from the Network of Indigenous Lawyers of the Brazilian Amazon. They are receiving legal training during the 21st edition of the Free Land Camp, in Brasília. For us, the training of new indigenous lawyers is extremely important and crucial for the exercise of democracy.
