Balanced Compound Feed Formulas (for dairy cows):

Ready-to-use compound feed (pellet/mash) formulas with ingredient percentages that mills can mix directly. I’ve given three tiers so you can match cost/yield. All % are as-fed, totaling 100. I also include 100-kg batch splits, feeding rates, and safety notes.

A) Economy (≈15–16% CP) — for 6–10 L/day

Percent mix
• Maize/Jowar/Bajra (any one)……… 30%
• Deoiled Rice Bran (DORB)……………… 40%
• Wheat Bran…………………………………… 15%
• Soybean Meal (SBM, 46% CP)……… 6%
• Groundnut Cake (GNC)………………… 5%
• Molasses……………………………………… 2%
• Mineral mixture (Type II)…………… 1.5%
• Common salt………………………………… 0.5%

100-kg batch: Maize 30 kg, DORB 40 kg, Wheat bran 15 kg, SBM 6 kg, GNC 5 kg, Molasses 2 kg, Mineral 1.5 kg, Salt 0.5 kg.
Expected nutrients: ~15% CP, ~65–68% TDN.

B)Standard (≈18–19% CP) — for 10–16 L/day:

Percent mix
• Maize/Jowar/Bajra……………………… 25%
• DORB………………………………………… 30%
• Wheat Bran…………………………………… 10%
• SBM…………………………………………… 12%
• Groundnut Cake…………………………… 10%
• Mustard/Rapeseed Cake……………… 5%
• Molasses……………………………………… 3%
• Mineral mixture…………………………… 2%
• Common salt………………………………… 1%
• Limestone powder………………………… 2%

100-kg batch: 25, 30, 10, 12, 10, 5, 3, 2, 1, 2 kg respectively.
Expected nutrients: ~18–19% CP, ~68–70% TDN; Ca:P ~2:1 (with mineral + limestone).

C) High-Yield/Transition (≈20% CP + energy support) — for 16–28 L/day:

Percent mix
• Maize/Jowar/Bajra……………………… 20%
• DORB………………………………………… 23%
• Wheat Bran…………………………………… 10%
• SBM…………………………………………… 18%
• Groundnut Cake…………………………… 12%
• Molasses……………………………………… 4%
• Bypass fat (Ca-fat)………………………… 3%
• Sodium bicarbonate……………………… 1%
• Yeast culture (live/SC)………………… 1%
• Mineral mixture…………………………… 2%
• Common salt………………………………… 1%
• Limestone powder………………………… 2%

100-kg batch: 20, 23, 10, 18, 12, 4, 3, 1, 1, 2, 1, 2 kg respectively.
Expected nutrients: ~20% CP, ~70–72% TDN; added rumen buffer + fat for NEB control.

Pelleting tips: 4–6 mm die, condition 70–80 °C, include a binder (e.g., bentonite/lignosulfonate) 0.5–1% if pellets are soft.

Feeding guide (rule of thumb):
• Concentrate per milk: 0.4–0.5 kg per liter of milk (twice daily feeding).
• Maintenance: 2.5% of body wt as dry matter; provide good roughage (e.g., 20–25 kg green + 4–5 kg straw/day for a 400–450 kg cow).
• Bypass fat: 150–300 g/day for cows yielding ≥15 L/day or in early lactation.
• Salt & water: 30–40 g salt/day; free-choice clean water (60–100 L/day).

Safe substitutions (keep protein & energy similar):
• Energy: Replace maize with broken rice, wheat, sorghum, or pearl millet one-for-one.
• Protein: Where GNC is costly/risky for aflatoxin, use SBM or sunflower cake. Mustard/rapeseed cake can replace GNC partly (watch glucosinolates; limit to ~5–7%).
• Brans: If DORB is scarce, raise wheat bran and compensate calcium with a bit more limestone.
• DDGS (maize): Up to 10–12% can replace part of SBM + energy grains (watch sulfur).
• Cottonseed cake: If used, keep ≤10% of concentrate, avoid in late-pregnant heifers due to gossypol risk.

Mineral–vitamin notes:
• Use a reputable Type II mineral mixture at 1.5–2.0% of concentrate.
• If mineral lacks vitamins A/D/E, add a premix to supply per cow/day: Vit A 50–80k IU, D3 10–15k IU, E 500–1000 IU (high yielders toward upper end).
• Ca:P around 2:1 overall; when rations are DORB-heavy (high P), keep limestone 1.5–2%.

Urea (optional, only for trained adult cows):
• If economics require, ≤1% urea in concentrate (and ≤3% of concentrate DM) can replace some SBM/GNC.
• Never feed urea to calves or offer dissolved urea water. Introduce gradually over 7–10 days and mix uniformly. Ensure readily fermentable energy (cereal grain) is present.

How to use with forages (practical):
• Medium yielder (10–12 L): 3.5–5 kg of Standard feed + 20–25 kg green fodder + 4–5 kg straw.
• High yielder (18–22 L): 6–9 kg of High-Yield feed + good quality legume/non-legume green + 3–4 kg straw; add bypass fat 200–300 g/day.
• Body condition: If BCS < 2.75, add 0.5–1 kg concentrate; if >3.25, reduce 0.5 kg.

Quality & safety checkpoints:
• Aflatoxin: Reject moldy GNC/cottonseed cake; use toxin binder 0.5–1 kg/ton when risk is high.
• Particle size: Grains medium-coarse (not flour); helps rumen pH.
• Gradual changes: Any ration shift over 5–7 days.
• Record milk & DMI weekly**;** adjust concentrate by ±0.25–0.5 kg as milk/yield changes.
