সয়েলের বিভিন্ন ল্যাবরেটরি টেস্টের পদ্ধতি সম্পর্কে বিস্তারিত আলোচনা করবো। প্রথমে আলোচনা করবো গ্রেইন সাইজ এনালাইসিস টেস্ট সম্পর্কে। সয়েলের পার্টিকেল সাইজ বা দানার আকার বের করার জন্য এই টেস্ট করা হয়। এই টেস্টের দুইটি পদ্ধতি আছে। একটা হচ্ছে সিভ এনালাইসিস। সিভ মানে হচ্ছে চালনি। সিভ এনালাইসিস করার জন্য সয়েলকে শুকিয়ে ভেঙে গুড়ো করে পাউডারের মতো করা হয়। এই পাউডারকে চালনি দিয়ে চেলে সিভ এনালাইসিস করা হয়। সয়েলকে চালনি দিয়ে চেলে এই টেস্ট করা হয়। এই চালনির ওপেনিং বা ছিদ্রের সাইজ কত হবে তার নিদিষ্ট স্ট্যান্ডার্ড আছে।
বিএনবিসি অনুযায়ী সিভ এনালাইসিসে ব্যবহৃত সবচেয়ে বড় ছিদ্রের চালনির সাইজ হচ্ছে ৪.৭৫ মিলিমিটার (মিমি) বা ০.২ ইঞ্চি। একে ৪ নম্বর সিভ বলে। আর সবচেয়ে ছোটো ছিদ্রের চালনির সাইজ হচ্ছে ০.০৭৫ মিলিমিটার। একে ২০০ নম্বর সিভ বলে।
বড় ছিদ্রের চালনি বা লার্জ ওপেনিং বিশিষ্ট সিভকে সভার উপরে রাখা হয়। তার নিচে একের পর এক ছোটো ছিদ্র বা স্মল ওপেনিংয়ের সিভগুলো রাখা হয়। মাটি থেকে তৈরি পাউডারকে ওজন করে সবার উপরের সিভের উপর ঢালা হয়। তারপর পুরো সিভের সেটটিকে সিভ শ্যাকার মেশিনে বসিয়ে ঝাঁকানো হয়। তাতে উপরের সিভ থেকে নিচের সিভগুলোতে সয়েলে পাউডার পড়তে থাকে। এসময় প্রতিটি সিভ বা চালনিতে কিছু পরিমাণ পাউডার বা সয়েল আটকে যায়।
০.০৭৫ মিলিমিটার বা ২০০ নম্বর সিভ দিয়ে যে মাটির দানা পাস হয়ে যায় বা চালনির নিচে পড়ে যায় সেই মাটিকে আর চালনি দিয়ে চালা যায় না।
চালনি দিয়ে যদি চালা না যায় তাহলে সয়েল পার্টিকেলে সাইজ কীভাবে বের করা হবে? এই ধরনের সয়েলকে বলা হয় ফাইন গ্রেইন্ড সয়েল বা সুক্ষ্ম দানার মাটি।
জিওটেকনিক্যাল ইঞ্জিনিয়ারিংয়ে এরকম ফাইন গ্রইন্ড সয়েলের দানার সাইজও প্রয়োজন হয় বিভিন্ন ক্যালকুলেশনে। আর এই ধরনের সয়েলের দানার আকার বের করার জন্য যে টেস্টের প্রয়োজন হয় তাকে বলা হয় হাইড্রোমিটার এনালাইসিস। এই টেস্ট অত্যন্ত জটিল। ট্রেনিং প্রাপ্ত টেকনিশিয়ান দিয়ে এই টেস্ট করাতে হয়।
সিভ এনালাইসিস ও হাইড্রোমিটার এনালাইসিস থেকে সয়েলের পার্টিকেলের যে সাইজ পাওয়া যায় তা দিয়ে একটা গ্রাফ প্লট করা হয়। নিচের চিত্রে এরকম একটা গ্রাফ দেওয়া হলো। উক্ত গ্রাফে পারসেন্ট ফাইনার বলে একটা কথা আছে। সেটা কী? পারসেন্ট ফাইনার মানে হচ্ছে সিভ দিয়ে কতো পারসেন্ট সয়েল পাস হলো বা চালনির নিচে পড়ে গেল। কোনো সুনির্দিষ্ট সাইজের সিভের জন্য এই পারসেন্টেজকে বলা হয় পারসেন্ট ফাইনার।
মনে করি টোটাল ১০০ গ্রাম সয়েলের পাউডারকে চালা হলো ৪ নম্বর সিভ দিয়ে আর সিভের নিচে পড়ে যাওয়া বা পাস হওয়া সয়েলের পরিমাণ ৯০ গ্রাম। এক্ষেত্রে ৪ নম্বর সিভ বা ৪.৭৫ মিলিমিটারের জন্য পারসেন্ট ফাইনার হলো ৯০ বা ৯০ পারসেন্ট সয়েল চালনি দিয়ে পাস হয়ে নিচে পড়ে গেল। এভাবে ২ মিমি, ০.৪২৫ মিমি ও ০.০৭৫ মিমি সিভ সাইজের জন্য পারসেন্ট ফাইনারের মান বের করা হয় এবং এই মানগুলোকে গ্রাফে বসানো হয়। এভাবে সিভ এনালাইসিসের গ্রাফ তৈরি হয়। চিত্রে গ্রাফের নীল রঙের অংশটি হলো সিভ এনালাইসিসের গ্রাফ। গ্রাফটির লাল অংশের মানগুলো বা হাইড্রোমিটারের অংশটি উপরে উল্লেখিত নিয়মে বের করা যায় না। সেটা বের করার জন্য আরও জটিল নিয়ম আছে।
