๐Ÿš™ A little detour, a few splashes and an extra night in Litchfield. Worth it? We reckon.

Heading into or out of Darwin on a Top End adventure? The Reynolds River Track is a great addition to your itinerary and well worth an extra night in Litchfield.

This 44 km track takes you from Litchfield Park Road through winding bush country, with two main water crossings and a bit of soft sand south of the Sandy Creek turnoff. Duck into historic Blyth Homestead and thereโ€™s another crossing to add to the adventure. ๐ŸŒฟ

The Southern end of the track meets Daly River Road, around 80 km South West of Adelaide River. Heading that way, youโ€™ll also pass the turnoff to Robin Falls, another great waterfall and swimming stop when conditions allow.

๐Ÿ•๏ธ Our tip? Make time to stay at both 4WD campgrounds.

๐Ÿ’ฆ Tjaynera Falls, also known as Sandy Creek, has flushing toilets and showers.
๐ŸŒฟ Surprise Creek keeps things simple with drop toilets and a remote bush camping feel.

Both have stunning waterfalls and swimming holes a short hike from camp. Sandy Creek Falls is 1.7 km each way, while Surprise Creek is a shorter stroll.

Only have time for one? Sandy Creek is our pick if you fancy a shower with your bush camping.

A 4WD campsite with a cracking swimming hole nearby? Thatโ€™s our top pick for camping in the Top End. ๐Ÿ‘Œ

High clearance 4WD only. In suitable conditions, itโ€™s manageable with some 4WD experience. Adjust your tyre pressures for the terrain, take it slowly and check water depths against your vehicleโ€™s limits.

Usually accessible from June to October, depending on conditions. Book your campsites and check the latest track and swimming access before heading out.

Give Litchfield that extra night. Thereโ€™s more to it than the usual waterfall lap. ๐Ÿ˜‰

๐Ÿพ Meet Luna, the unofficial welcoming committee at our Darwin depot!

Luna takes her roles as staff supervisor and team mood booster very seriously. Her daily schedule includes greeting everyone, chasing her ball, accepting as many pats and belly rubs as possible, and enjoying long naps in the office aircon. Somehow, she wakes up right on time for staff lunch. Every single day. ๐Ÿ‘€

Luna came to us from in 2023, after spending her first few weeks with the Curtain family. She was just 12 weeks old when she relocated to Darwin, and she was there to welcome our very first Hilux 4WD Camper later that year.

She might have a pedigree, but her real talent is making the whole team smile. Luna gets more attention than any of us, and honestly, she has earned it.

Always full of energy and always ready for a cuddle. Luna, we love you! โค๏ธ๐Ÿถ

๐Ÿš™ Not your average 4WD hire car

A standard rental car is fine for getting from A to B. But when you want to take the adventurous route, explore a remote national park or head onto a permitted beach, our Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 4WD Car is made for the job.

Each Prado comes ready for an Australian road trip with:

โœ… Air compressor

โœ… 4WD recovery and safety equipment

โœ… UHF radio and emergency locator beacon

โœ… Long range fuel tank

โœ… Fridge to keep the drinks and snacks cold

โœ… Table and chairs

โœ… 180 degree shade awning

โœ… Approval to travel on selected unsealed roads and gazetted tracks

โœ… Access to remote national parks, adventurous routes and permitted beaches

One family of four took their Prado through South Australia and shared this cracking review:

โญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธ

โ€œPerfect for our South Australia trip! Having a 4WD that could get us onto the beach was a total game changer, especially with young kids. The vehicle had everything we needed, and communication before we arrived was excellent. The team was super helpful and took the time to show us how to set everything up. They truly went above and beyond. Weโ€™ll definitely be using them again for future travels and wouldnโ€™t hesitate to recommend them.โ€

More gear. More freedom. More of Australia within reach.

Where would you take it?

How do you actually plan a 4WD road trip in Australia? ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ

Not just the dream destinations and incredible photos. The practical stuff that needs to happen first.

We recently worked with Mel and Marcel, who completed an epic Broome to Darwin adventure in one of our Toyota Hilux 4WD Campers.

And they know a thing or two about travelling to Australia from ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช. This was actually their third Hilux 4WD Camper hire with Adventure Rentals ๐Ÿ™Œ

Together, we have put together this practical field guide to help you plan your own Australian 4WD road trip.

The starting point is simple:

โ˜€๏ธ Season first
๐Ÿ“ Then your route
๐Ÿš™ Then your vehicle

Everything else follows from those three decisions.

Swipe through all 12 steps covering when to travel north versus south, three week route ideas, what your 4WD genuinely needs, fuel and water planning, dirt road driving, permits, power, booking your vehicle and plenty more.

This is the first of four guides.

Coming next:

๐Ÿ“ Perth โ†’ Adelaide
๐Ÿ“ Perth โ†’ Perth
๐Ÿ“ Broome โ†’ Darwin

Spring and summer are the perfect time to explore southern Australia from Perth or Adelaide, while autumn and winter (May - September) are ideal for travelling through Northern Australia, including Broome, Darwin and Cairns. Our Broome to Darwin guide covers around half of the iconic Savannah Way and is one to save if you are planning a northern adventure from May 2027.

If an Australian 4WD road trip is on your wish list, save this guide for your planning session and send it to the person you want to travel with. ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿš™

๐Ÿ‘‹ STAFF SPOTLIGHT | Meet Ben

Originally from Brisbane, Ben started life as a qualified carpenter before doing a bit of roaming, working on stations around Queensland and eventually finding his way to Darwin.

When he arrived in the Top End, he was keen to try something different from carpentry. Then, in true Darwin style, an opportunity popped up. Ben spotted the Adventure Rentals yard, wandered in off the street looking for work and happened to be in the right place at exactly the right time. Very NT. No big plan, just have a crack and see what happens. ๐Ÿค

Eighteen months later, Ben has become a big part of our Darwin crew. After learning from Drew, our resident 4WD master, he now builds our vehicles, handles dispatches and returns and knows his way around an Adventure Rentals rig pretty well.

We even managed to drag him back onto the carpentry tools to help build our fantastic new Darwin office. Sorry Ben, there really was no escaping it! ๐Ÿ˜‚

Along the way, he has also caught the 4WD bug and used everything he has learnt to build his own 79 Series Land Cruiser, complete with canopy and all the bells and whistles. We reckon that rig is going to see a few adventures.

Outside work, Ben is a mad soccer fan, has played Menโ€™s A Grade for Mindil Aces here in Darwin and, thanks to his UK roots, is a very loyal Liverpool supporter. โšฝ

Now Ben is getting ready for his next adventure and we are going to miss having him around.

Quiet, kind, hardworking and trustworthy, he is one of those people who just gets on with it and gets the job done.

Thanks for everything, Ben. We wish you all the best for whatever comes next and hope that 79 Series takes you on many incredible Australian road trip adventures! ๐Ÿงก

Planning a remote Aussie outback road trip? Driving off-road across Australiaโ€™s vast landscapes is one of the most incredible ways to experience nature, if you know how to handle the track ๐Ÿš™.

While the views are unforgettable, outback conditions demand respect. Corrugations, soft sand, remote wildlife, and hidden obstacles require a bit of local know-how before you hit the dirt.

Swipe through for 5 core rules straight from our Outback Driving Guide to keep you safe, comfortable, and confident on your journey:

1๏ธโƒฃ Air Down Early
Adjusting tyre pressure on unsealed roads isn't optional, itโ€™s vital. Lowering your PSI increases your tyreโ€™s contact footprint, providing maximum grip on soft surfaces and dramatically smoothing out severe corrugations while protecting against stone punctures.

2๏ธโƒฃ Respect Dust & Wildlife
Australia's native wildlife is most active at dawn and dusk, itโ€™s best to be safely parked up at camp during these hours. On dirt tracks, always slow down for oncoming vehicles to reduce blind dust clouds and flying rocks.

3๏ธโƒฃ Engage Low Range Before You Need It
Donโ€™t wait until you lose momentum or get stuck. Engaging Low Range early gives you maximum torque, superior control, and prevents unnecessary strain on the vehicle when tackling steep inclines or soft sand.

4๏ธโƒฃ Read the Road Ahead
Outback tracks change constantly. Keep your eyes scanning well beyond your bonnet to spot dips, washouts, and exposed gravel early. Smooth steering and steady speeds keep your ride comfortable and safe.

5๏ธโƒฃ Travel Prepared
Remote travel means self-reliance. Always share your itinerary with a reliable contact, check road reports, and ensure you have proper recovery gear onboard.

At Adventure Rentals, we donโ€™t just hire premium 4WD campers, we equip you with the knowledge to explore Australia with total peace of mind. Every rental includes full recovery equipment and our comprehensive In-Vehicle 4WD Guide.

๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ 8,500 KM, ONE PRADO AND A WHOLE LOT OF AUSTRALIA ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Guido and Anita recently picked up one of our Toyota Prado 4WD Cars in Perth and pointed it north.

Then they just kept going. ๐Ÿ˜‚

8,500 km later, they rolled into Darwin after one seriously epic Aussie road trip through some of the best bits of WA and the NT.

Their adventure included:

๐Ÿ“ Hyden
๐Ÿ“ Cervantes
๐Ÿ“ Geraldton
๐Ÿ“ Kalbarri National Park
๐Ÿ“ Shark Bay and Monkey Mia
๐Ÿ“ Carnarvon
๐Ÿ“ Coral Bay
๐Ÿ“ Exmouth and Cape Range National Park
๐Ÿ“ Karijini National Park
๐Ÿ“ Port Hedland
๐Ÿ“ Broome
๐Ÿ“ Cape Leveque and the Dampier Peninsula
๐Ÿ“ Fitzroy Crossing
๐Ÿ“ Purnululu National Park and the Bungle Bungle Range
๐Ÿ“ Kununurra
๐Ÿ“ Katherine
๐Ÿ“ Litchfield National Park
๐Ÿ“ Darwin

Not a bad little lap. ๐Ÿ˜

Think turquoise water, red dirt, dusty outback roads, massive gorges, remote national parks, rugged ranges and enough spectacular scenery to completely fill the camera roll.

And after 8,500 km together, the Prado earned itself a glowing 5 star review. โญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธ

โ€œHervorragendes Auto, รœbergabe sehr gute Einfรผhrung und Abgabe hat bestens geklappt.โ€

Or in English:

โ€œExcellent car, the handover included a very good introduction and the return went perfectly.โ€

That is exactly what we love to hear.

Our premium Toyota Prado 4WD Cars are made for adventures like this.

Proper 4WD capability, all terrain tyres, recovery gear, UHF radio, satellite communication, fridge, table, chairs and the equipment you need to get out and explore some of Australiaโ€™s more remote corners with confidence.

And before you head off, our team gives you a proper vehicle introduction so you know your Prado and its equipment before the red dirt begins.

Because if you are going to tackle 8,500 km across Australia, you may as well do it in a bloody good 4WD. ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Perth to Darwin.

Coast to coast via the outback.

Red dirt to tropical Top End.

Now THAT is a road trip. โค๏ธ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ
