This is awesome!
Must Read...

by Curtis Mock:

I've been around my fair share of homeless people.

After a few years in Florida I moved to San Diego.
And if you don't know much about America's favorite
city, you do probably know that the weather is pretty
much perfect all the time.

If I were homeless, it's where I would live.

But I never saw a lot of creativity in their signs.

Homeless people in other cities spend their days
asking for donations so they can have enough to
afford a cheap motel that night.

Well in San Diego they don't need as much to
survive because they don't need to worry about
a roof.

They can sleep on a park bench every night of the
year without fear of heat exhaustion in the summer
or frostbite in the winter.

I've since moved to Denver and I am amazed at the
creativity of the homeless people here. They don't
just hold up a sign, they take their marketing message
very seriously.

I've seen everything from "Bet you can't hit me with
a quarter" and "My wife has been kidnapped and I
am 98 cents short for ransom" to "Cops 1 block
ahead, drop your beer" and "Every dollar kills a
Justin Bieber fan". Which happens to be my favorite.

At the intersection of Speer and I believe Broadway
there are the same three guys all day every day
doing renditions of the Chicken Dance.

They are smiling, laughing, and playing it up for
the people stopped at the light.

I pay them something every day. You have to
admire their creativity.

But one guy, one guy in particular has really gotten
my attention.

He's very unassuming. He isn't positioned at the
busiest intersection like many others, he's at a
stoplight in a residential neighborhood near York
and 12th.

What made me notice him is that he uses a different
sign each day. As I drive by day after day I become
curious and try to figure out why he uses so many
signs.

So I decide one day last week to ask him and he
says to me, "My market research has shown me
what signs to use and when."

I immediately pull over. I have to know more.

He continues to explain to me that he's figured
out what messages work on what days and times
of day.

For example, on Monday mornings he has figured
out that a sign saying "Mondays suck. But it could
always be worse…you could be me. Spare a
quarter?" gets the angry zombie drivers to realize
their life isn't so bad.

But then on Monday afternoon he found that sign
isn't as effective, so he switches to a sign that says,
"Hooray, you survived Monday! Celebrate by
loaning me a quarter!"

He said he always uses humor on Friday. He is
experimenting with a couple signs such as, "I
could be climbing in your window right now, but
I'm here, asking nicely. Spare a quarter?" and
"Got a dollar? I'm saving up for a b**b job.
Wouldn't it be funny to see a homeless man with
b**bs? Support the cause"

I can't make this stuff up. I was rolling in laughter
and my eyes wide with awe. This guy is a genius.

But he said Sunday mornings are his bread and
butter. His corner is near a big church and he
uses signs that say things like "Jesus gave me
a dollar. Don't you want to be more like Jesus"
and "I don't expect 10% of your income…a dollar
will do".

He says since it is a lot of the same people passing
him on Sunday morning, he wants to keep them
entertained and looking forward to his message of
the week, so he has to be extra creative.

Something else that amazed me is that he knows
many people by name. More than just a few times,
I've heard him say "Hey John" or "Good to see you
again Stacy" to people passing by.

He says anyone who gives him money, he asks
their first name. He then pulls out a notebook and
writes down their make of car and description.

He showed me the book and it is the EXACT same
notebook that I use. He flipped through page after
page of names and descriptions of his donators.

He also shared with me that he has found that he
has to ask for a donation. He can't just have a
witty sign. He closes each message with "spare
a quarter?" or similar. He found that while most
people enjoy his creative signs, if he doesn't ask
for the sale, fewer people donate.

And yes, he used the words, "ask for the sale".

I asked him what kind of work he did in his former
life and he responded "marketing".

Which gives me hope that I would make a pretty
good homeless person.

He asked my name, I asked his (it's Daniel), I
gave him $20 for his time, and guess what?
I drove by yesterday and as I was passing by at
20 miles per hour I hear "Curtis! What's up buddy!"
You know good and well when I get stopped at
that stoplight this afternoon that he's going to get
a dollar or two from me.

The moral of the story is that if this guy can take
the time to learn his market, deliver a message,
track the results, tweak his message to cater to
his audience, ask for the sale, and remember
names to guarantee repeat business…

Why aren't you doing the same?

Sometimes we get bogged down with the
mundane and forget about the simplest yet
most important aspects of our business.

So take a lesson from my friend Daniel and do
the necessary things, be smart about your
marketing, learn your audience, and Always
ask for the sale.
