“Sewa!” Along with hands in prayer, this is the greeting in the language of Nepal’s Indigenous Kulung people. While staying in the small village of Chhekma, we we’re being warmly greeted by every person we encounter. Travelling with the team filming Carrying Everest - a documentary exploring and understanding the Mahakulung, the region of the Kulung people. Many Kulung work as porters for the tourism industry in the Himalayas, and Carrying Everest follows the Kulung porters’ journey all the way to Everest Base Camp.

While filming with , this will be home for the next few days in Chhekma, Mahakulung Indigenous district in east Nepal. Here you can see our host“Pa” feeding the chickens in the garden. Not a bad mountain view :)

We have arrived in Chhekma, in the remote “Mahakulung” district. This is home to the Kulung People, one of many indigenous communities in Nepal. The main source of economy is agriculture, and there are many fields like this one. It took over 5 hours by jeep to get here from Phaplu airport, and for the rest of this journey. For the next 2 weeks we will explore several villages to help film the documentary . After that we will be walking all the way to Everest Base Camp!

Very excited to be heading to Nepal for some unique cultural immersions over the next month, including visiting some remote indigenous villages on foot. Flying in was already spectacular - the towering Himalayan mountain range was higher than the clouds!!
