NSW Mining
The NSW Minerals Council is the leading industry association representing the NSW mining industry. Mining is critical to the economy of NSW.
Our sector provides NSW’s most valuable exports and around one-quarter of total NSW exports by value. There are thousands of people across NSW who work in mining and depend on a strong mining industry for their livelihoods. Our mining companies directly spend around $10 billion in NSW each year, underpinning the economic strength of many regional communities, and we also provide the coal used to generate over 80 per cent of the electricity needs of NSW households and businesses. Turning a mine site into habitat animals love to call home?
Daryl makes it sound easy, but bringing back the roos, bees and birds takes plenty of planning, science and care.
Coming from a lab research background, Brodie switched things up to become an Environmental Officer in mine rehabilitation.
It's a job that's active in the seeding, land restoration, monitoring and bringing local habitats back to nature.
After six years, the HVO Continuation Project has secured approval from the NSW Independent Planning Commission.
Now we’re calling on NSW Parliament to prioritise legislation to lock that decision in and protect it from activist ‘lawfare’.
HVO’s coal workers, families and local communities deserve to be able to plan for the future.
There's wide support across the community for this project, and we saw that through the extensive assessment process.
It’s time to get on with the job.
For the people of HVO, this is about their jobs, their families and their future in the Hunter.
After six years of waiting, approval of the HVO Continuation Project is a major step forward.
Hear from the people at the heart of this decision, and what it means to them and the community they call home.
Justin Holbrook is OUR Coach of the Year.
He’s brought this team closer to the community and given the people of Newcastle plenty to be proud about. From wooden spoon to the NRL Grand Final.
Bring it home this Sunday!
Congratulations also to Andrew Webster on winning Dally M NRL Coach of the Year.
This is why climate activists don't get it. They yell and shout, but they don't listen.
The Hunter Valley Operations Continuation Project has finally been approved by the NSW Independent Planning Commission after six years of rigorous, independent assessment.
It gives certainty to 1500 workers there for the next 19 years, along with the 700+ businesses that supply the mine.
This is good news.
But the climate activists from Rising Tide decided to show up unannounced, and uninvited, to the media conference where we could finally share this good news. To rant and rave. Even though they have their own access to the media and are quoted up and down every website on this story.
This was a stunt. And a failed one at that.
As NSW Minerals Council CEO Stephen Galilee said, emissions from coal mining in NSW are falling faster than any other industry and faster than the state average. Better than you thought, right?
We welcome this news from the NSW Independent Planning Commission. And we call for more civil discussion in public debates on these issues.

It’s decision time for the Hunter Valley Operations Continuation Project. Mine Manager and local resident, David Foster wrote an opinion article for the Daily Telegraph today highlighted this significance of the decision.
Here’s an excerpt:
“A cloud of anxiety hangs over our region. The 1500 mine workers at Hunter Valley Operations (HVO) and 700plus local businesses relying on us are waiting on a knife’s edge.
We are locked in the sixth year of a prolonged approval process for the HVO Continuation Project – six years to secure approval to keep operating an existing mine and keep local people in jobs, with zero increase to annual approved production volumes.
HVO did not spend half a decade being stubborn. We listened, adapted, compromised and acted in good faith with the NSW government.”
Mining families like Blaine and his boys have backed Newcastle Knights through every high and low.
