Art or eyesore? You be the judge! 🏛️🎨

Next time you’re walking through Martin Place, look up. The Sydney General Post Office (GPO) is famous for its grand Italian Renaissance style, but it’s the “bizarre” sculptures hidden in the arches that caused a national scandal.

Here is the tea on the GPO carvings:

The Vision: Architect James Barnet and sculptor Tomaso Sani wanted to celebrate everyday life—depicting a sailor, a fishmonger, and even a printer at work.

The Outrage: Critics at the time (the 1880s) hated them! They called them “”caricatures”” and “”grotesque,”” arguing they weren’t “”noble”” enough for such a prestigious building.

The Drama: The controversy was so heated it was debated in Parliament for over eight years!

Despite the calls for their removal, these quirky figures stood their ground. Today, they are a beloved part of the GPO’s unique charm and a reminder that even in the 19th century, Sydney knew how to stir up a good debate.

Love uncovering the scandals and stories behind Sydney’s landmarks? Our guides have plenty more where that came from. See the city’s history come to life on an Ultimately Sydney tour.

Cheers to a history lesson that’s anything but dry! 🥃🏥

Did you know that Sydney’s oldest hospital owes its existence to a serious amount of spirits? Back in 1811, Governor Macquarie struck a deal that would make any modern accountant’s head spin: he paid the builders in “liquid gold.”

In exchange for building the Sydney Hospital, three savvy entrepreneurs were given a three-year monopoly on the import of 45,000 gallons of rum.

Here’s the breakdown:

The Problem: The colonial government was broke.

The Solution: Use the colony’s favorite “currency” (Rum) to fund public works.

The Result: The magnificent buildings on Macquarie Street we still admire today!

Next time you walk past the “Rum Hospital,” remember, it wasn’t just built with bricks and mortar, but with a whole lot of booze and a massive party.

Want to discover more of Sydney’s wild and “spirited” history? Join us on a tour and see the city through the eyes of the locals who know its best secrets.
