Indian languages including Hindi, Punjabi and Tamil are gaining stronger pathways in Australian schools, with new federal support helping community language schools expand learning opportunities for students in Years 7-12. The latest funding is part of a broader push to strengthen language skills and keep cultural connections alive.

The initiative will support teaching resources, curriculum development and participation across more than 15 Asian languages, recognising the important role community language schools play in Australia’s multicultural future. For Indian Australian families, the move could create more opportunities for young people to learn, maintain and proudly carry their heritage languages.

South Australia Police are appealing for information after six marble statues representing Hindu deities, including Krishna and Kali, were stolen during an early-morning break-in at a temple in Holden Hill. The incident occurred shortly before 5am on 10 August, with damage also reported at the temple.

The statues hold significant cultural, religious and financial importance for Adelaide’s Hindu community. Police are urging anyone who witnessed suspicious activity near the Peat Avenue temple or knows anything about the missing statues to come forward. Information can be provided anonymously to Crime Stoppers, quoting reference 217357.

New Zealand’s Education Ministry has pushed back against a proposal to formally recognise Hindi as a nationally supported school subject, saying previous consultation did not show sufficient demand for Hindi as a standalone NCEA subject. Hindi can still be taught by individual schools where there is enough community demand.

The petition, presented to Parliament by Labour MP Priyanca Radhakrishnan, seeks a stronger national pathway for Hindi, including teaching resources across primary, intermediate and secondary schools. Supporters argue recognition would help preserve language, strengthen cultural connections and reflect the growing Indian community in New Zealand.
