Two years ago - we created a live facial recognition demo for our Smash Delta Community Launch event - to demonstrate how simple it was to deploy the technology and the consequential risks it posed for privacy.
Since then, the technology has been linked to wrongful arrests, discrimination against people of colour and encroachment on civil liberties.
Last week the EU data protection watchdog called the technology a “deep and non-democratic intrusion” into people’s private lives.
This week is Privacy Awareness Week here in Australia - and just in time, my colleague Dr Sean Carnaffan has released a blueprint for protecting public space and safer use of computer vision in society.
