The passing of legendary ABC Radio Sydney presenter James Valentine at 64 has sparked a massive national outpouring of grief and appreciation. As a beloved public figure, his choice of voluntary assisted dying (VAD) has been met with widespread public applause and affirmation.
But what does a society communicate when it responds to a chosen death with celebration?
In our latest article, we honor Valentine's legacy by engaging in the exact kind of honest conversation he spent his career championing. We look past the tidy headlines to explore the complex psychological grief experienced by families, and the unintended culture of "expectation" that public celebration can create for the vulnerable, the sick, and the elderly.
True compassion means asking the hard questions. Read the full piece on our Substack: https://righttolife.substack.com/p/a-nation-applauds-but-what-are-we

When we talk about assisted dying, the conversation usually centres on the terminally ill — people in unmanageable pain, at the end of a long life, making a considered choice.
Wendy Duffy's case is something different.
She was 56, physically healthy, and had never recovered from witnessing the death of her son. She travelled to Switzerland and paid $13,500 to die at the Pegasos clinic. The primary requirement was that she be assessed as sound of mind — by an organisation whose existence depends on facilitating these deaths.
No terminal diagnosis. No requirement to exhaust treatment options. Just grief, guilt, and $13,500.
A year of trauma counselling costs a fraction of that sum. She was never offered it.
Her pain was real. Her loss was real. And she deserved far more than what she received.
We've written about Wendy's story and what it reveals about the direction Australia is heading.

A 26-year-old woman has been approved for assisted dying. The public response has been applause. But she said herself — "I still wish for a future I'm never going to have."
That is not peace. That is not dignity. That is a young woman who deserved more from the world around her — and a society that chose to hand her a way out instead of fighting for her.
This week on Life in 5, we also cover the conviction of Clive Johnson — a retired man in his 70s, found guilty of breaching a buffer zone in Northern Ireland for reading the Bible and praying. He never once mentioned abortion. And we look at what Lyle Shelton and Family First are saying about Australian laws that are already heading in the same direction.

The US Department of Justice has released an 800-page report documenting something significant: the Biden administration systematically targeted pro-life and religious organisations while failing to act on those who attacked them.
Pregnancy centres were firebombed and vandalised. A group called Jane's Revenge claimed responsibility for 16 attacks. There were zero federal arrests.
At the same time, the Biden DOJ was building surveillance files on peaceful pro-life individuals — including home addresses, photographs of their families, and travel plans.
That is now documented in a formal government record. It cannot be dismissed as partisan claim or anecdote.
President Trump has since pardoned 23 pro-life Americans prosecuted under Biden-era applications of the FACE Act. The current DOJ has acknowledged what happened plainly: a two-tiered system of justice was in operation.
Australia has its own pressures on pro-life work. This report is a reminder of what can happen when those pressures are institutionalised — and why vigilance matters.

Trump promised to be the most pro-life president in history. So why is Planned Parenthood still receiving $286 million in federal funding?
The White House says its hands are tied — multi-year Biden-era agreements, court rulings, legal complexity. That explanation is real. It's also incomplete.
During Trump's first term, a single regulatory change called the Protect Life Rule caused Planned Parenthood to walk away from Title X funding entirely. That rule wasn't reinstated on day one. Pro-life leaders are asking why — and they deserve an answer.
The good news: new 2027 funding guidelines would bar abortion providers from Title X altogether. The mechanism exists. The precedent exists.
But it only holds if the pressure does.
Those of us in Australia are watching — and learning.

She got pregnant at 17. Lost friends. Faced judgment. And chose life anyway. Today, Trump's Surgeon General nominee Dr Nicole Safir is a Mayo Clinic-trained cancer specialist — and her son Nick was there at every graduation.
This week on Life in 5, we look at the lies women have been told about motherhood, Nicole's story of resilience and hope, and what's happening in Washington as pro-life leaders push for stronger action on abortion pills. It's pro-life news that matters — clearly told, without the noise.

A quiet but significant development out of Washington.
The acting head of the US Food and Drug Administration has pledged to be the most pro-life FDA commissioner in the agency's history — a direct commitment made to Students for Life president Kristan Hawkins.
The immediate priority: mifepristone. The abortion drug has been linked to serious adverse effects in women, and its approval has never been subject to adequate scrutiny. Pro-life advocates have been calling for action for years.
For Australians watching from a distance, this story carries a clear message. Cultural and legal change is possible. It requires persistence, pressure — and the right people willing to act.

Only 10% of Australian aged care facilities offer euthanasia — and advocates are furious.
The pressure to change that is already underway. And Victoria's "gag clause" is gone by 2027.
Watch to understand what's really happening — in your country, in your nursing homes, and in the courts overseas.
Euthanasia was legalised in every Australian state and territory with promises of strict safeguards and voluntary access only for the most extreme cases. This week, those promises are unravelling in real time. We're also covering a damning 200-page US report alleging the Biden Department of Justice used federal law to target pro-life Christian advocates — including sharing their family photos with abortion lobbyists — and a US Supreme Court decision allowing the abortion pill to continue being delivered by mail, without a doctor's visit. Life in 5 brings you the pro-life news that matters, with clarity and without the noise.
