This afternoon, we gathered once again for another insightful CPA Australia City Taxation Discussion Group session, bringing together tax professionals to connect, learn, and stay ahead of important developments affecting our clients.
Today's presentation, “The Federal Budget’s CGT Changes – What They Mean,” was delivered by Arda Ahmed, Principal at Norton & Quay Tax Law. Arda provided a practical overview of the significant proposed CGT changes taking effect from 1 July 2027, including the removal of the 50% CGT discount, cost base indexation, the proposed 30% minimum tax on capital gains, transitional rules, and changes to the active asset reduction rules.
A big thank you to Arda for sharing his expertise and helping practitioners better understand what these changes could mean for clients and tax practices. Thank you to Sophie Jiang for introducing Arda to the group.
The session was proudly organised by Teddy Kosasih, Partner at MaxGrowth HQ, and Henry Kwok, Partner at DVT McLeods, with a shared commitment to creating a forum where practitioners can exchange knowledge, explore complex issues, and strengthen the quality of advice we provide.

"Every problem solved is another opportunity to serve people with purpose"
This afternoon, we gathered once again for another engaging CPA Australia City Taxation Discussion Group session, bringing together tax professionals committed to continuous learning, collaboration, and delivering better outcomes for the people and businesses we serve.
Today's presentation, "From Assessment to Objection – Tax Administration from Both Sides of the Table," was delivered by Gavin Quayle, Principal at Hilltop Tax Advisory. Drawing on his unique experience as both a tax adviser and former ATO decision-maker, Gavin shared valuable insights into the tax administration rules every adviser should understand, together with practical strategies for navigating ATO processes and advocating effectively for clients.
The session was a timely reminder that great tax advice extends beyond technical knowledge. It requires sound judgement, practical experience, and the ability to understand problems from multiple perspectives to achieve the best possible outcome.
A sincere thank you to Gavin for sharing his expertise, practical experiences, and unique perspective from both sides of the table. His presentation challenged us to think beyond legislation and focus on delivering practical solutions that create real value for our clients.
A special thank you also to Sophie Jiang from Gilbert+ Tobin for connecting us with Gavin and helping make this valuable session possible.
This session was proudly organised by Teddy Kosasih, Partner at MaxGrowth HQ, and Henry Kwok, Partner at DVT McLeods, with the shared vision of fostering a professional community where practitioners can exchange knowledge, strengthen their skills, and continue raising the standard of advice within our profession.
Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to another insightful discussion, and to CPA Australia for providing the venue and supporting the ongoing development of tax professionals. Because when we solve problems with integrity, knowledge, and purpose, we don't just achieve better tax outcomes—we build greater trust and make a lasting difference in the lives of those we serve.
