“It can’t be done.”

I’ve heard it too many times.

And if I’m honest, I’ve said it too.

But there’s a real difference between “can’t be built” and “never been done before.”

Physics sets the hard limits. Everything else is negotiable (if you’re willing to do the work).

The job isn’t to be the person who says no the loudest.

It’s to find the narrow path that respects the design, the budget, the codes, and the client’s ambition — then prove it works with numbers, not opinions.

These days, when someone tells me it can’t be done, I don’t argue anymore. I just ask to see their calcs and their models.

**Show me your numbers.**

If the maths and physics are sound, I’ll agree immediately.

But don’t try to convince me that 1 + 1 = 3 when we both know the answer is 2.

Every job we have taken has come from a referral.

We have never run an ad.

I do not say that to boast. I say it because of what a referral actually costs the person giving it.

There are firms who will do it cheaper, or faster, or with less fuss.

None of that mattered enough for someone to put their own name on the line to recommend us.

When a person recommends you, they are spending their own credibility, telling someone they respect to trust you the way they trust their own judgement.

You do not earn that with marketing. You earn it on the jobs nobody saw, and the times you did it properly when a shortcut would have been easier.

We treat every project like the next referral depends on it - because it does.

Development is a team sport.

And the projects that win trophies are the ones that play like a proper squad (not a one-man team trying to take every set piece).

Too many developers try to be owner, manager, captain and star player all at once.

It rarely ends in silverware.

Think about a title-chasing football club:

• The Owner / Chairman - Brings the vision, writes the cheques and sets the ambition. That’s the Developer. They stay off the pitch.

• The Manager - Scouts the talent, picks the formation, sets the tactics and makes the big calls at half-time. That’s your Project Manager.

• The Captain - Leads from the front and turns the game plan into something the team can actually execute on the pitch. That’s the Architect.

• The Vice-Captain - Organises the backline, wins the tough battles and makes sure the defence never collapses under pressure. That’s us, the Structural Engineers.

After 27 years in the game, I can tell you this:
Your real job as the Developer isn’t to be the best technical player on the field.

It’s to build the right squad early, give them a clear game plan, and then trust them to play.

When the team is picked right and the culture is strong, the project almost runs itself — like a side that’s been together for years and knows each other’s runs in their sleep.

Pick your players.

Set the formation.

Then back them from the touchline.
