A positive step forward for our Rockingham community.
Thank you to Cr Peter Hudson for continuing to advocate for the homeless and rough sleepers of Memorial Drive and for helping bring attention to an issue so many in our community have been witnessing firsthand for a long time.
Seeing advocacy turn into action matters. The installation of CCTV at Memorial Drive and Safety Bay Road is not the full solution but it is a start. A start toward safety, dignity and acknowledgment that these are human beings deserving of compassion, protection and support.
Too many people are doing it tough right now. Behind every tent, every sleeping bag and every rough night is a person with a story, trauma, heartbreak or circumstances many could never imagine.
This issue cannot simply be moved on, ignored or hidden away. Real change happens when community, local government, services and everyday people come together and say enough is enough.
IPL Radio – Inspire Community Services at Unit 2/103 Dixon Road Rockingham is also currently accepting non-perishable donations to help support our local homeless community. Together with The Cafe Knitters, Bill, Linda, Robyn, myself and many more incredible volunteers and community members, we have been helping distribute donations and essential items to those doing it tough from Rockingham through to Fremantle.
Every food item, blanket, toiletry, sleeping bag and act of kindness truly makes a difference.
Thank you as well to every volunteer, outreach worker, advocate and community member continuing to support those doing it hardest in our city. The conversations are getting louder, the awareness is growing and hopefully this is just the beginning of bigger support and real solutions.
The homeless are not invisible.
They matter.
Their lives matter.

✅ ADVOCACY IN ACTION
Let me be clear: this is real progress, but it is still nowhere near good enough.
With a perfected 'super-motion' on its way to Council this month, our community's pressure to address the homelessness epidemic on Memorial Drive is already delivering results.
A portable CCTV trailer has been installed at the intersection of Memorial Drive and and Safety Bay Road, so that people sleeping rough can at least do so with some safety for them and their belongings.
This is a positive step; and that's why I'm calling on the state government to show some compassion and work with local authorities - actually go down to Memorial Drive and meet these struggling Australians.
Talk to them like people, not numbers to be swept under the rug. They deserve better and the community expects better too. I'm prepared to make Local Government step up to the plate on this - will you answer the call?
