Our second year at the Fremantle Underwater Film Festival ! 🌊

A weekend of underwater films, marine-inspired art and conversations with people who care about oceans.

We loved sharing Hammerhead Hub and meeting the community whose shark sightings help inform research and conservation. Thanks to everyone who stopped by, signed up to volunteer or shared a story! and to the organisers and volunteers who made it all happen. 🦈

We’re so grateful to have been part of such a fantastic evening celebrating WA World Ocean Day 2026 🌊💙

It was wonderful to connect with fellow conservationists, researchers, ocean lovers, and community members of all ages who are passionate about creating positive change for our marine environment.

We loved being part of conversations about protecting our oceans, celebrating Western Australia’s incredible marine life, and raising awareness for hammerhead shark conservation alongside so many inspiring advocates.

Happy World Ocean Day! 🌊

This World Ocean Day, we’re celebrating the theme “Strong Marine Protected Areas for Our Blue Planet.”

Strong protection is essential for some of our ocean’s most vulnerable species, and 2026 has already brought some important wins for hammerheads! Earlier this year, scalloped and great hammerhead sharks were added to Appendix I of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species (CMS), recognising the urgent need to reduce human-caused mortality and strengthen protections for these threatened species.

Closer to home, Point Peron was recognised as an Important Shark and Ray Area (ISRA) - a coastal habitat identified as critical for scalloped hammerhead juvenile aggregations. Scalloped hammerheads are globally listed as Critically Endangered (the step before going extinct!), so identifying and protecting these important areas has never been more important.

At Hammerhead Hub, our research contributes to understanding how hammerheads use these habitats by combining citizen science with traditional research. Together, this evidence can help inform marine spatial planning, conservation policy, and future protection efforts.

This World Ocean Day, we celebrate the science, collaboration, and conservation action needed to ensure we have a future with thriving oceans and hammerheads.💙

Point Peron is now officially recognised on the global stage! 🦈

This stretch of the Western Australian coastline has been internationally recognised as an Important Shark and Ray Area (ISRA), a critical habitat for aggregations of threatened scalloped hammerheads and blacktip sharks.

This recognition was made possible through Dr. López’s .ocean research on scalloped hammerhead aggregations, combined with invaluable contributions from citizen scientists, which together provided the evidence needed to delineate and propose Point Peron as an ISRA.

Over one-third of sharks, rays, and chimaeras are now threatened with extinction, according to the IUCN Red List. Around 75% of these species live in coastal areas like this, where fishing pressure, habitat loss, and climate change hit hardest.

Scalloped hammerheads and blacktip sharks are especially at risk, as they live long lives, reproduce slowly, and exist in low numbers, making recovery difficult once populations decline.

ISRAs like Point Peron play a key role in shaping conservation, informing marine conservation planning, and policy decisions that can help protect these species into the future.

This isn’t just a beautiful place, it’s a vital one 💙

What an incredible day we shared on Sunday !

We’re so grateful to everyone who came along to celebrate citizen science with us - it was inspiring to see such a passionate community showing up to support hammerhead shark research 🦈

From the trivia quiz to the VR shark experience and our talk on hammerhead sharks, the whole day was filled with curiosity, connection and great energy.

A big thank you to Kurt Krispyn for being such a fantastic MC and creating a fun, welcoming atmosphere, to for hosting us in such a great space, and to .freediving.yoga for supporting the community engagement campaign this summer.

We’re also incredibly grateful to the talented local artists and small businesses who donated prizes, contributed to the photo exhibition, and helped make the space so special hd .adams.art .com_

And of course, thank you for these incredible photos capturing the celebration of the event.

We’re so excited to keep building this community with you all, this is just the beginning.
