🏊‍♀️ The countdown is on! This time next week, the Australian Pool Lifesaving Championships (APLSC) take over Perth HPC, bringing together top athletes from across the country for three action-packed days of competition.

Conducted in various forms since 1965, the inaugural Australian Pool Lifesaving Championships were held in 1987 in Alice Springs and remain a highlight of the Australian lifesaving sport calendar, rotating to a new State or Territory each year.

This time, WA (and Perth HPC in particular) are the lucky hosts for 2026! 🤩

The APLSC brings athletes, teams, volunteers and staff together from across Australia for three days of competition. Providing a unique opportunity for our Royal Life Saving members to come together in celebrating their extensive contributions to the lifesaving movement and friendships made along the way.

From high-speed pool events to lifesaving skills and CPR challenges, it’s your chance to witness the very best in lifesaving sport all in one place.

It's pretty frosty outside right now, so it’s common for families to wonder whether to pause swimming lessons ❄️ What we see every year, though, is that winter is when swimmers make their biggest breakthroughs 💪

With fewer interruptions, smaller class numbers and consistent routines, children and teens who stay enrolled through winter build stronger skills, better confidence and real independence in the water.

Pausing lessons often means spending the first half of summer re‑learning lost skills. Staying consistent now means your young ones hit summer (and Perth's stunning beaches) confident and capable 😊

According to Australian Guidelines:
By age 6 your child should be able to:
✅ Swim 5m continuously without stopping or touching the bottom
✅ Float on their front and back

By age 12:
✅ Swim 50m continuously without stopping or touching the bottom
✅ Float, scull or tread water for 2 minutes and signal for help
✅ Demonstrating water safety knowledge for a range of aquatic environments

By age 17-plus
✅ Swim 400m continuously without stopping or touching the bottom
✅ Float, scull or tread water for 5 minutes and signal for help
