Taking young people from from refugee & migrant backgrounds on hikes to connect with nature

08/03/2026

Today we celebrate International Women’s Day and take the opportunity to admire some of the amazing young women we take on hiking adventures with us, and thank all the female guides that assist to make these events happen. This is one of our absolute fave pics from a few years ago, when this lovely group of friends stopped on trail to look back to see how far and how high they had hiked, and just enjoy the peace of being in the hills of Perth together. They were lost in the moment for a short while before turning to give us the most wonderful smiles and we continued on our way. No words needed.

🌟🌟 Exciting News 🌟🌟
First Hike Project has been nominated for the ‘Encouraging Participation Award’ at this year’s WA Outdoor Industry Awards. Our little 100% volunteer driven organization embraces the idea of inclusiveness, and encourages young people from migrant and refugee backgrounds to come out with us on hiking and camping adventures at no cost to them. In addition, we are extremely proud to have developed a ‘Participant to Guide’ program to take the next step with some of those participants and train them to be guides within our organization. Cross your fingers for us at the Awards next week 🙏🙏

What an amazing year 2024 was, starting with FHP in Perth being announced as finalists in the WA Government Multicultural Awards. Thanks to our beautiful volunteers Anne & Meretta for representing us there. We followed up with some fun Autumn day hikes with groups from 2 schools supported by our amazing team of volunteers. We were next nominated as a finalist in the Volunteering WA ‘Inclusive Volunteering Award’. Attending the awards ceremony with our inspirational ‘Participant to Guide’ graduates (Anas, Bellamore and Reza) we were over the moon to take out the award. Spring saw us embark on some overnight hiking adventures as the hiking season came to an end. Lastly we were invited to a Garden Party at Government House by Volunteering WA In acknowledgement of our award earlier in the year. Sarah, Lou and Chloe attended and mingled amongst other wonderful volunteer groups from throughout Western Australia. We would like to thank all of our volunteers who give up their time to make our hikes happen and ensure everyone goes home with a smile on their face and warm memories in their heart. We could not do it without you all. 2025 looks like an exiting year ahead with a grant to spend on training for volunteers as well as a sponsorship deal from a major outdoor retail company. I will be reaching out for support from another organisation to make 2025’s hikes even more adventurous, so watch this space.
