Repair Cafe Doubleview

Members of the community are invited to bring broken household items to the Repair Cafe to be fixed with the help of our volunteer repairers. All repairs are made free of charge, however we welcome donations to help cover costs. Items for repair could include:
- clothing / textiles
- low voltage electrical appliances (with an adapter or battery operated)
- small furniture / wooden objects
- bicycles
- device help (phones, laptops)
- gluing and other similar repairs
- knives, scissors, garden tools etc needing to be sharpened

Tea, coffee and morning tea treats are available for a gold coin donation. Perhaps you’d also like to take advantage of our Chatter & Natter table, where you can sit down and get to know someone new in your community. Our Repair Cafe operates every month, except December and January. We also offer a 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 service at our events - but only for items that are generally hard to recycle. So bring along your:
- plastic bottle tops (all types)
- oral/dental care products (including toothbrushes, toothpaste tubes, floss containers and Piksters)
- disposable razors
- used pens, including Sharpies
- bread bag closure tags - plastic only, not cardboard (if they bend they're cardboard)
- empty aerosol cans (they MUST be empty!)
- clean plastic ('Glad') wrap - particularly that which is wrapped round home delivered newspapers

𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗿 𝗖𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁? The Repair Cafe movement began in 2009 in the Netherlands, by journalist Martine Postma. There are now 1,000s of Cafes across the world, in more than 30 countries. Including here in Doubleview!

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗿 𝗖𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗼:
- reduce the number of items going to landfill, and the amount of energy wasted in making and transporting new goods.
- up-skill people in the art of repair.
- save money for individuals who can continue to use their possessions and reduce landfill costs for local governments.
- build community connections and resilience.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer at our Repair Cafe (we also need general helpers, not just repair experts), or have any questions please get in touch (see section above with details of how to do this). 𝗛𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗿𝘂𝗹𝗲𝘀
(Like all rules, ours aren’t exciting, however they are essential to manage everyone’s expectations). They are on display at each Repair Cafe session:

- Children must be supervised at all times, particularly as there may be potentially dangerous tools lying around.
- The work carried out in the Repair Cafe is performed free of charge on a voluntary basis by the repair experts at hand.
- Visitors may carry out the repairs themselves whenever possible, but repair experts on site can help if necessary.
- The fact that the repairs are being performed by unpaid volunteers reflects the allocation of risks and limitation of liability; neither the organisers of the Repair Cafe nor the repair experts are liable for any loss that may result from advice or instructions concerning repairs, for the loss of items handed over for repair, for indirect or consequential loss or for any other kind of loss resulting from work performed in the Repair Cafe. The limitations set forth in these house rules shall not apply to claims declared justified on the basis of liability arising by virtue of applicable consumer protection legislation which cannot be lawfully superseded.
- Visitors offering broken items for repair do so at their own risk.
- Experts making repairs offer no guarantee for the repairs carried out with their help and are not liable if objects that are repaired in the Repair Cafe subsequently do not work properly at home.
- Repair experts are entitled to refuse to repair certain objects.
- Repair experts are not obliged to reassemble disassembled appliances that cannot be repaired.
- Visitors to Repair Cafe are solely responsible for the tidy removal of broken objects that could not be repaired.
- To reduce waiting times during busy periods, a maximum of one broken item per person will be examined at a time. The visitor must then join the back of the queue if there is a second item for repair.
- A voluntary donation for repairs undertaken is greatly appreciated - cash or card.
