Well leaders lead well

That was one of the ideas that has stayed with us after our 'Student Wellbeing in Faith-Based Schools' dinner in Perth last week

We brought together school leaders for an open conversation about what it takes to support the wellbeing of students and staff, with insights from our guest speaker, Laura Allison PhD, Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of Notre Dame, who we’d like to thank for sharing her expertise and helping shape such a thoughtful conversation, alongside Pivot’s Head of Education, Adam Inder

A few ideas stood out:

▪️ Wellbeing is a precondition for learning, not simply an outcome of it
▪️ Every student needs a teacher who knows them, likes them and will advocate for them
▪️The benefit in schools having shared values, service and community, that then gives young people a sense of belonging and purpose
▪️ Never underestimate playfulness, laughter has a strong place in a flourishing classroom
▪️ And, it's important to look after your team. Wellbeing initiatives should include both your staff and students

The story says student resilience is in decline.

Five years of data across Australian schools says otherwise. 📊

Resilience, belonging and safety are all rising post-COVID - resilience rose the most. And the standout stat: "I ask for help when I need it" is now the highest-scoring, most-improved statement in the dataset.

The schools driving this aren't running a new program. They're checking in every term, sharing what they find with students, and acting on it - visibly.
