ALL THIS TALK ABOUT M**F:

During our search into this year’s film festivals to attend, we discovered that a long-standing institution dedicated to showcasing alternative, unconventional, straight-up weird films to the city of Melbourne - M**F - has run into quite a bit of drama and confusion. It has recently changed ownership and undergone a dramatic reconstruction. However, it seems both the ‘’New’’ and ‘’Old’’ M**F are still advertised across multiple festival platforms.

After a brief search on the Web, it quickly becomes evident that the old runner of the Melbourne Underground Film Festival, Richard Wolsterncroft, has made a mark of himself shamelessly expressing deeply controversial opinions regarding topics such as race and the LGBTQIA+ community. According to the New M**F director, Shane Lyons, ‘’The focus of M**F openly turned that way as well. Besides a handful of micro-budget exploitation features and 30-40 shorts, Wolstencroft eagerly programmed “special” sections of far-right videos and other paranoid propaganda from anti-vaxxers, MRAs, covid “freedom movement” cookers, and Trump supporters.’’ Interestingly, the biggest M**F scandal to date was over Wolstencroft’s decision to showcase a hardcore gay p**n film that was banned from public screening.

The New M**F has only started operating this year, bringing with it hope that it will carry on the festival's original purpose without the blatant propaganda of far-right ideology. However, the filmmakers might be easily misled to submit their films to a festival that no longer operates.

What do you make of this? Are you planning to go to the new M**F?
