Voichița has become a novice nun in a desolate convent in rural Romania. When her former lover Alina returns, hoping to bring Voichița to her new home in Germany, Voichița is reluctant to leave and resume their previous relationship.

A film about faith and fanaticism, BEYOND THE HILLS is based on tragic true events – a complex portrait of the institutions that failed these two women, carefully handled by director Cristian Mungiu.

Hu Bo 胡波’s AN ELEPHANT SITTING STILL unfolds over a single day in a bleak northern Chinese city, following four drifting souls – a bullied student, a neglected boy, a desperate mother, and an aging man – each seeking escape from disillusionment.

Completed shortly before Hu’s death at 29, the film was lauded winning the highly prestigious FIPRESCI Prize at Berlin International Film Festival, and Best Feature at the Golden Horse Awards.

A well-respected doctor learns his teenage daughter has been assaulted on the eve of an important exam. As the exam would guarantee her a scholarship overseas, he falls into a tangle of underhanded bribes and favours to ensure his daughter's exam results, and stop her future from being ripped away from her... at the cost of his moral compass.

Cristian Mungiu's GRADUATION paints a bleak picture – one where ethical rot and corruption have filtered down to everyday family life in Romania following Nicolae Ceaușescu’s repressive regime.

Matthias returns home to his small town after working abroad, and things have changed. Racism is on the rise, and his young son has been rendered non-verbal after seeing something in the woods.

As in many of his films, Cristian Mungiu considers the effects of migration in Romania. In R.M.N., he looks particularly at the gap left by emigration, asking who fills that gap and what it stirs up in the people left behind.
