An emotional story with all the feels. This is an example of how medicine and science looks forward aspirationally until some day, inspiration becomes reality.

This is the story of Kassandra, who had blood cancer at 18. An experimental surgery to preserve her o***y to give her a chance of future fertility. The passage of more than 20 years. The battle to replace tissue that was frozen when she had a type of cancer that doctors worry could theoretically survive at a cellular level in the frozen ovarian tissue. An absence of regulation for the future transplant of tissue when it was stored. An international collaboration when Kassandra simply would not take no for an answer and with informed consent wanted to try. And at the end of the - finally, a beautiful family.

And another twist I absolutely love in this story, the REI registrar (specialist in training) Dr Sara Matthews present at the laparoscopy to retrieve her ovarian tissue was the same doctor who decades later as a senior REI specialist helped to create her baby via IVF (retrieving eggs after the frozen tissue was successfully implanted to her o***y and became active).

This hit home for me as I recall the many times over the past two decades I have been called to assist young women to offer emergency fertility preservation strategies. I know from experience what a privilege and a delight it is to see patients come full circle and realise the dream.

Thanks to my colleagues and research collaborators Melbourne IVF and Virtus Health for making this vital work possible.

I was proud to present this tool to an audience of clinician and scientist peers at the Society of Australia and New Zealand meeting yesterday in Canberra Fertility Society of Australia and New Zealand

Very grateful to be awarded the Geoff Driscoll Medal for Best Clinical Paper which includes an invitation to present our work at the British Fertility Society in 2027.
