Knowing a platform intimately when it comes to the drivetrain itself goes hand in hand with safely tuning them.

The P5AT may not have the most stellar record for reliability, and our shop ute is no exception, but there is always a reason why failiures occur, pulling them apart and actually interpreting the story an engine has to tell as to why it failed always helps point you in the right direction when it comes to tuning or maintaining them to mitigate the issues. Which is what we did 40 thousand kms ago on this engine and spec'd the rebuild to mitigate them grabbing bores.

We rebuilt it with a host of aftermarket parts and clearances that are machined far from what the factory spec's, and we also run far thicker oil than what they do standard, but as with anything there is trade offs or compromises, we found this one is still living happily with bigger bore clearances, stiffer valve springs at approximately 200hp 700nm on 33s, no sign of damaged rockers, cam lobes, bore wear, and no sign of excessive heat being put into the crown of the pistons. This engine will happily do another 300 thousand kms at this power level judging by the lack of wear we have seen so far.

We dont just button bash a laptop! Theres far more to learn and experiment with thats genuinely interesting 😁

This is the Fuel pump cover that goes on the front timing cover of a P5AT that came with a timing cover and VRS kit.

Notice the seal isnt even flat, there is no way this would even attempt to be oil tight once fitted. Weve seen 3 like this so far.

Front main seal was the same.

This is why we only fit genuine parts, sometimes they may be a little more expensive, but it beats having to re do work twice because even though you fitted everything correctly it still leaks like a sieve.

Making 184hp and 550nm!
With a big front mount and a massive front grille allowing bulk airflow air temps were super cold, meaning the AFR's we achieved this power at were super lean, we could've leaned on it a fair chunk more well into the 190s and near 600nm.

That being said Shane's main request was get it to drive nicer and save fuel, pairing the massive improvement in useable torque with a transmission tune that better utilizes the engines mid range makes this ute feel 10x better to drive, no more needless revving on take-off through the first 3 gears, crisp intuitive down-shifts when you want them and earlier up-shifts when cruising means itll go better and use less fuel, and the trans runs colder than it did at standard power with the standard trans calibration.
