βWe often get asked why people suffer Chronic Painβ But there is no one answer. π€―
However Dr Shek sums it up below:
βChronic pain may result from a combination of causes including injury, trauma and surgery. Genetics may also have a role. Quite often, the pain continues long after the original insult is resolved.
Pain does not always indicate underlying damage. Pain may result from central sensitisation. This is abnormal changes to the pain processing pathways in the body. The mechanisms that cause chronic pain are different from the ones that lead to acute pain.
Chronic pain can be exacerbated by stress, depression and anxiety, work and relationship difficulties, inactivity and over-exertion.
Given the complexity of chronic pain, it is important to consult a pain specialist for a thorough assessment, accurate diagnosis, exploration of underlying contributors to pain, and advise regarding interventional options.β

π©ΊMeet Dr Elaine Shek, the face behind Perceptions Pain Practiceπ©Ί
A little about Dr Shek:
Dr Elaine Shek has over twenty-five years experience in Medicine. She obtained her medical degree in 1996 from the University of Queensland and from there worked in general practice and in the hospital setting for two decades. During this time she saw a lot of patients who were suffering chronic pain and from there she developed a passion for helping those patients find treatments that reduced their pain and stress.
Dr Shek then started further training to become a pain specialist. In her chronic pain speciality, she has trained extensively at the Princess Alexandra Pain Unit, QPain, and at Migraine Specialist. She is a fellow of two specialist colleges, Fellowships of General Practice and Faculty of Pain Medicine Australian New Zealand College of Anaesthetists.
Dr Shek has since started her very own practice at the start of 2023, Perceptions Pain Practice where she hopes to continue to help many more patients who suffer from chronic pain conditions.
