TLDR; No. Piercings do NOT have medical benefits.
The notion that body piercings can have medical benefits originated from the ancient Chinese practice of acupressure, specifically a practice called βear seedingβ, a form of auriculotherapy.
The ear contains many nerves and ear seeding utilises pressure to stimulate these nerves by delicately applying ceramic/metal beads (or traditionally, vaccaria seeds) with an adhesive in precise locations that correspond with whatever health concern is the aim of the treatment.
Over the course of 3-5 days, the seeds are gently massaged 2-3x a day (or as instructed by a professional).
This process should not cause pain to your ear. If you experience pain from massaging the seeds, you are massaging them too hard and the treatment wonβt be as effective.
There hasnβt been many medical studies for ear seeding and the range of benefits it provides, however the participants of the studies did show signs of improvement with things like back pain and migraines. It was also found to be unsafe for pregnant people, as it can induce early labour.
While some piercings are in similar locations to those targeted in auriculotherapy, thereβs a number of reasons why body piercing is not an effective substitute.
1) Any potential pressure on the targeted site is not consistent with the pressure used in ear seeding. Pressure will also only be present while the piercing is healing or irritated, and as we learned before, this is far too much irritation to be effective.
2) The locations targeted in auriculotherapy are not viable locations for body piercing and in some cases, not possible at all. If we attempted to pierce some of these sites, it would result in terrible irritation or even rejection of the body jewellery.
3) Finally and most importantly, BODY PIERCERS ARE NOT TRAINED IN ACUPRESSURE OR AURICULOTHERAPY!
It is not in our scope of practice to offer these kinds of services and to do so would put our clients at risk.
