Its not often you see one of the houses we built on the front cover of The West real estate section.

The Winter Solstice is a time passive solar homes show their true benefits, from the winter northern sun entering into the home through windows on the north side of the home. High light windows help get the winter sun into the centre of your home.

Last weekend we went to The Sustainable Day @ Witchcliffe Ecovillage near Maragret River WA. The Founder Mike & Michelle gave us a detailed description of all the sustainable benefits of WEV from 100% recycling rainwater to 100% renewable energy & productive gardens spread around the Eco village. There were 8 homes open for sustainable day 2024 , from Strawbale homes, to H**pcrete , rammed earth & timber homes all designed & built using sustainable materials. Every home in WEV has to be a minimum. 8 star energy rating.

2023 was a busy year for Seascape Designs, we only built one house but did 15 jobs during the year. Some where bathroom renovations other where alfresco's or extensions.

At Seascape Designs we use a waste management system on all our job sites. We install 5 separate steel cages to collect our different forms of building waste. Cage 1. Is all solid materials , stone, concrete, brick, pavers & tiles. Crushed and recycled back into site as road base or garden bed drainage. ( as photos attached ) 2nd cage is all metal waste, mainly colorbond roof off cuts but also strapping, cans, bracing, rondo, anything steel is collected and then recycled at local transfer station. Cage 3. Plastic, this bin fills up the most 2 or 3 times. Hopefully this product can go back to being recycled into public seating. Cage 4. Timber, every offcut of timber is collected and re used as many times as possible throughout the build. From a full cage or two it usually ends up just a few wheel barrows at the end of the job when the offcuts are so small . We have had local community groups come collect some of our left over timber & pellets. ( which now cost $8 to dump at the tip) Tommo is using a few to make his new pellet bed. Cage 5. Cardboard , this cage is the 2nd busiest , 2-3 trailer loads per job. Lucky our local councils are set up for cardboard recycling. On average we recycle approx 50-70% of our site waste, which is 70% less waste going to land fill. The building industry creates 40 % of our landfill waste. The whole planet needs to start changing our waste habits and start recycling more before their is more waste land than native land. War on waste is an excellent show on the ABC on how everyone can start helping to save more waste.

Last weekend we did a H**pcrete workshop at Margaret River, learning how to build walls using hempcrete. Industrial H**p is one of the oldest forms of construction still used today. A zero carbon product, fire proof, natural material, low embodied energy, insulation & sound absorption plus creates good indoor air quality.

Margaret River has some excellent bike & walking trails around town, through the native forest and along the river.

The Margaret River job has 3 different forms of cladding, Weathertex weatherboards, JH Easylap & my favorite cladding material Exsulite thermal cladding. Light weight easy to use, great insulation & acoustic qualities.
