Have you ever noticed this about a common fly?

Perhaps it's a cleaning routine? Or.....Casting a magic spell?

We recently bought this new addition to our patch.

Hippeastrum - double amaryllis.

They’re "flower-first" bulbs.

As this is a new plant in my garden world, I looked up for some information so I can learn how to care for it.

Firstly I got this for a discounted price. The plant nursery was clearing some varieties as the seasons change, and secondly - they are a perennial (yay!!).

I love when my fluke purchases turn out even better.

For a Brisbane based garden - this is what I should expect:

1. *June-July*: Flower stems shoot up with no leaves. That’s why they’re called "naked ladies" sometimes. All energy goes to the bloom.

2. *After flowering*: Once the flower fades, the strap leaves will start growing from the base. Usually Aug-Sept in Brissie.

3. *Summer*: Leaves do all the work feeding the bulb for next year.

So if you notice the photo, the plant has no leaves.

No leaves right now = not dead, just following the bulb schedule. The bulb has enough stored energy to push flowers first, then grows leaves to recharge.

So for now all I have to do is keep watering lightly while it’s blooming, even with no leaves. Once flowers die off, I will let the leaves grow wild all summer.

More on this one when seasons change again.

Looks like there will be a story for every season with this one.

🌸 Brisbane loves Pink Trumpet Trees and we see them all over - lining streets during winter.

They drop their leaves first, then explode into those pink trumpets before summer leaves come back.

Locals usually call them "Pink Trumpets" or "Poui trees".

These trees can handle heat and storms well too.

Have you spotted these?

Much love ❤️
