There is a lot of work in business that nobody sees.

That is why being named a finalist in three categories at the 2026 Luca Awards means so much to me.

I have been named a finalist for Professional Bookkeeper of the Year – Practice Owner and Service to Bookkeeping or Bookkeeping Advocate of the Year, while In Control Bookkeeping has been named a finalist for Small Professional Bookkeeping Practice of the Year.

Of course I am incredibly proud of that recognition. But for me, it isn't really about the word "finalist".

It is about what these particular categories represent.

I care deeply about this profession. I care about the standard of work we provide, the way bookkeepers are valued and understood, and the businesses and people who trust us with such an important part of what they have built. I have spent a lot of time advocating for our industry, contributing where I can and trying to leave it stronger than I found it.

At the same time, I have been quietly building In Control Bookkeeping with those same values at its core.

So to have both sides of that work recognised nationally feels incredibly significant.

There are plenty of milestones in business that are easy to see from the outside. This one feels different because it reflects so much of the work that happens when nobody is looking.

And that means more to me than I can properly put into words.

Volunteers make our communities work. Lisa and I put our bookkeeping skills to use as Treasurers for our local school P&Cs, and this weekend we're heading to Perth for the annual WACSSO conference.

It's a chance to connect with other volunteers doing the same behind the scenes work, swap notes, and celebrate an organisation that backs public education across WA.

Volunteering isn't glamorous. Most of it happens in spreadsheets, meeting minutes and finance reports nobody sees. But it matters, and days like this remind you why you started.

Looking forward to a great couple of days with like minded people who show up for their schools.
