House paint price hikes add to home-building pain

Aaron Stewart, who runs housing construction company Mayfair Building Group in Adelaide, said there had been a succession of price increases across steel, gyprock, timber, concrete and plastic pipes for plumbing, and that paint companies have been among the last to signal increases.
βTheyβre one of the last ones to pass on higher costs, itβs pretty much across everything now,β Stewart said. βRubbish removal from building sites was one of the first.β
The flow-on effects into higher construction and renovation costs would be noticeable across Australia as quotes on new projects factored in the price hikes, Stewart said.
The biggest rise had been from plumbing giant Reece, which lifted prices for plastic pipe by as much as 36 per cent.
Stewart said the COVID-19 disruptions, higher building insurance indemnity costs, wages costs and a new round of price rises meant an architecturally designed extension on a home of around 150 square metres would now cost almost $1 million, compared to $450,000 about five years ago."
