First commercial Electric Vehicle Charging System established in Gweru

Story by Tafara Chikumira

THE Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA) has commissioned the first commercial electric vehicle charging system in Gweru in a move set to bring convenience to motorists.

The commercial electric vehicle charging system, which has been set at the heartbeat of the nation will bring much-needed convenience to motorists traveling across the country using the latest vehicles.

The installation of the infrastructure has also created an appetite for electric vehicles in the City of Progress.

โ€œI am very delighted that as Gweru we have been remembered. By installing this system, it means my fears of acquiring an electric vehicle have since been allayed. I now know that I can acquire an electric vehicle and get a charging point,โ€ said one of the residents.

Another added, โ€œThe introduction of this infrastructure is a big plus for us as Gweru community. This means there is going to be economic activities in our city as people come to charge their vehicles.โ€

Stakeholders in the energy sector say the transition from fossil fuels to electric vehicles requires meaningful collaborative efforts and supporting infrastructure.

โ€œAs ZERA we support the eco-friendly platforms. There is a new appetite for electric vehicles. It is essential for us to be collective in providing alternatives to fossil fuels. It's in line with the low emissions development strategy. Transport sector to reduce emissions by 40 percent per capita by 2030. Let's invest in electric vehicles since we already have a critical resource in form of lithium,โ€ said the ZERA Board Chairperson, Dr David Madzikanda.

Petrotrade Board Chairperson, Mr Michael Dodo said, โ€œThe energy revolution requires innovative efforts. We will create wealth for the nation through carbon credits. I want to commend the regulator for proffering solutions to the devastating effects of climate change.โ€
