Diabetes mellitus (DM) is recognised as a major health problem. Ninety-nine percent of diabetics suffer from type 2 DM and 10% from type 1 and other types of DM. The number of diabetic patients worldwide is expected to reach 380 millions over the next 15 years. The duration of diabetes is an important factor in the pathogenesis of complications, but other factors frequently coexisting with type 2 DM, such as hypertension, obesity and dyslipidemia, also contribute to the development of diabetic angiopathy. Microvascular complications include retinopathy, nephropathy and neuropathy. Macroangiopathy mainly affects coronary arteries, carotid arteries and arteries of the lower extremities. Eighty percent of deaths in the diabetic population result from cardiovascular incidents. DM is considered an equivalent of coronary heart disease (CHD). Stroke and peripheral artery disease (PAD) are other main manifestations of diabetic macroangiopathy. Diabetic cardiomyopathy (DC) represents another chronic complication that occurs independently of CHD and hypertension. The greater susceptibility of diabetic patients to infections completes the spectrum of the main consequences of DM. The serious complications of DM make it essential for physicians to be aware of the screening guidelines, allowing for earlier patient diagnosis and treatment.

The primary purpose of a bone density test is to evaluate bone strength and density. This non-invasive procedure helps healthcare providers diagnose osteoporosis and assess the risk of fractures by measuring the amount of minerals in bones, typically at the hip and spine. The results, expressed as T-scores and Z-scores, compare bone density to that of healthy individuals of similar age and s*x, aiding in early detection and management of bone health conditions. Regular bone density testing plays a crucial role in preventive healthcare, enabling timely interventions to reduce the risk of fractures and maintain overall bone health.

Over the weekend, Junior Parliamentarians from Hurungwe, Mudzi, Chiredzi and Harare engaged with Senior Parliamentarians from the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Child Rights — submitting a powerful motion calling for urgent national action to end child labour and child trafficking.

Senior Parliamentarians pledged to push the motion in the Parliamentof Zimbabwe, ensuring children's voices are represented at the highest level of decision-making.

Key asks from the Junior Parliamentarians included:
📌 Stronger law enforcement against perpetrators
📌Increased community awareness
📌 Strengthened child protection & safeguarding systems
📌 Closer collaboration between Junior & Senior MPs
📌 Higher budget allocation for child protection
📌 Improved government monitoring & reporting

This engagement is part of our EU🇪🇺-funded Fighting Child Labour and Child Trafficking Project, implemented in partnership withZimbabwe Environmental Law Association, Zimbabwe National Council for the Welfare of Children (ZNCWC) and Coalition Against Child Labour in Zimbabwe. Our partner ZNCWC, working with the Zimbabwe Youth Council (ZYC) ensured Junior MPs are equipped to lead this advocacy.
