More Than a Hustle: Gold Pans Fill Pockets, Not Just Dreams

Chegutu’s small-scale mining community is buzzing, and it’s not just the drills making noise. For many young miners in the area, gold mining is turning into more than a hustle — it’s bringing real joy, income, and a sense of purpose.

Speaking to _ZiMining_ during a recent tour of G-Zone Mining and Milling Company in Chegutu, one young miner Pride Jesinawo couldn’t hide his excitement.

After pulling a promising sample from his shaft, he said he was “looking forward to making more gold” now that the results were in.

That “good sample” means everything here.

For youth who often struggle to find formal jobs, a lucky strike feels like proof that hard work underground can pay off above ground.

The mood on site reflected it. Groups of young miners were swapping tips on shoring, sharing food, and planning the next blast. The tour, highlighted that what used to be seen as a risky gamble is slowly becoming a craft they’re proud of, with more youth learning safety, finance, and teamwork along the way.

Gold didn’t just fill their pans today. It gave them something to look forward to tomorrow.

Media Tour Update: G-Zone Mining & Milling Hosts planetGOLD Zimbabwe Tour in Chegutu

G-Zone Mining and Milling Company opened its gates in today for a media tour in partnership with planetGOLD Zimbabwe project, alongside the Ministries of Mines and Mining Development; Environment, Climate and Wildlife; Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development; Health and Child Care and the Environmental Management Agency.

The visit gave journalists and stakeholders a firsthand look at how G-Zone is readying to implementing mercury-free gold processing and responsible mining practices.

Artisanal and small-scale gold mining accounts for a significant share of Zimbabwe’s gold output, yet it is estimated that 96% of artisanal gold is currently produced using mercury.

planetGOLD Zimbabwe Project Manager Nyaradzo Mutonhori said the project plans to support 7,500 artisanal miners across 11 districts, with a target to reduce mercury use by 4.85 tonnes. THE REOPENING of Kamativi Mine has revitalised this once-neglected mining town, creating over 1,200 jobs and pouring millions into local infrastructure and services.

Kamativi Mining Company (KMC), a collaboration between China’s Yahua Group and Zimbabwean partner Defold Mine (Private) Limited, has invested upwards of US$100 million in the initial phase of its lithium project.

After halting operations in 1994 because of a sharp decline in tin prices, the mine is now pivoting towards lithium extraction, with plans to invest a total of US$249 million.

Since resuming operations in September 2022, KMC has generated around 300 direct jobs and more than 1,000 indirect jobs through contractors.

The company has also contributed over US$8 million in taxes to Zimbabwe’s treasury.
