Captain Lionel Messi has told Barcelona he wishes to leave the club immediately, a source confirmed on Tuesday (Aug 25).

The club source said Messi, who has spent his entire career at Barca, informed the club about his desire to leave by sending a burofax, a service used in Spain to urgently dispatch a document that requires proof to third parties.

The 33-year-old Argentine, who joined the club in 2000 as a youth player, has a contract with the Catalans until 2021.

Fifa president Gianni Infantino has been cleared of violating the world governing body’s regulations after a preliminary investigation by its ethics committee.

Infantino is the subject of a criminal investigation over an alleged secret meeting with Swiss attorney general Michael Lauber. Both deny wrongdoing.

Fifa said documents shared by the Swiss courts were scrutinised.

“No aspect of the conduct analysed constitutes a violation,” it said.

Stade Francais have called off their friendly against Toulon due to players having not recovered from lung damage caused by Covid-19.

The club, which put its side into isolation last week after an increase in positive results, estimates those affected need another week’s rest.

After consulting the league’s medical commission, the match on 27 August was cancelled for health reasons.

Last week, the club had a reported 25 positive tests among players and staff.

African qualifiers for the 2022 FIFA World Cup were pushed further until next year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“Qatar 2022 [qualifiers] set for May 2021,” the Confederation of African Football (CAF) said in a statement.

“The 40 teams in contention for the five slots for Qatar 2022 will commence the journey between 31 May and 15 June 2021 with the Day 1 & 2 matches,” the CAF said.
