A number of things may jointly or singularly cause bees to avoid colonizing hives. I will mention just a few
1) Substandard hive construction
Hives with gaps tend to be avoided if there are readily available compact hives or natural nesting sites in the vicinity
2) Lack of regular external and internal hive inspection
Bees do not move into hives already colonized by other insects such as spiders, wasps, zvitemamachira, ants etc and bees again tend to avoid colonizing hives surrounded by spiderwebs. Most beekeeping projects are blighted by this

3. Poor hive setup.
Some hives are set facing the direction of the prevailing wind, or directly in the blistering sun, or in an ant infested place and no deterrent measures effected etc
4. Absence of effective swarm attractants. A lot of potential beekeepers think beeswax is a swarm attractant. We have specially formulated the MacJohnson Swarm Lure which has proven time and again to be effective in attractive bees into hives.

Since we are in business, opportunities to cut corners, bend rules, or engage in unethical shortcuts are everywhere. It might seem tempting, especially when facing tight deadlines, competitive pressures, or financial struggles. In the short term, these tactics can appear profitable — saving time, reducing costs, or securing deals faster. But the hidden cost is far greater than any immediate gain.

The real value in business comes from something money can’t buy: peace of mind. Knowing that every decision was made with honesty and integrity means sleeping soundly at night, free from the fear of scandals or hidden repercussions. A clean conscience isn’t just morally right — it’s a strategic advantage. Trust from customers, partners, and employees builds sustainable success.

In the end, integrity is an asset that compounds over time, delivering returns far greater than any short-term gain ever could. At MacJohnson Apiaries we have over the years consistently chosen long-term success over quick wins — because peace of mind is the most valuable commodity in business.
