Bulawayo is nicknamed "Skies" ! 🇿🇼
Locals call it "Blues" or "Skies" because of the city’s stunningly clear, deep blue horizon that seems to stretch on forever. It’s a point of pride that reflects the bright, open atmosphere of the city! 💙🏙️✨
Beyond the wide streets, Bulawayo is home to the Natural History Museum of Zimbabwe, which is the largest museum in the Southern Hemisphere and ranks as one of the best in Africa.
A World-Class Archive
The Second Largest Elephant: The museum features the second-largest mounted African elephant in the world.
Rare Specimens: It houses an incredible collection of over 3,500 specimens, including a dodo egg and a Coelacanth—a "living fossil" fish that was once thought to be extinct for millions of years.
The Gateway to Matobo
The city also sits on the edge of the Matobo National Park , a UNESCO World Heritage site. This area contains the highest concentration of leopards in Zimbabwe and some of the world’s most stunning granite "balancing rocks." It is also the site of the "World’s View," where the panoramic landscape stretches so far it feels like looking over the edge of the earth.
The "City of Kings and Queens"
While often called the City of Kings due to its Ndebele royal heritage, Bulawayo is also celebrated for its vibrant arts and culture scene. It hosts the National Art Gallery and numerous independent studios, making it the creative heart of Zimbabwe where traditional Ndebele craft meets modern urban expression.
